Personal Data Exposure: Meta’s AI Contractors Can Access Your Information

Estimated read time 2 min read

Concerns over personal data privacy arise from Meta’s AI training program.

To enhance its AI functionalities, Meta has been engaging external contractors to analyze chats exchanged between users and its chatbot. As of May, this chatbot boasts an impressive monthly user base of one billion. However, some contractors report they have encountered private user data while reviewing conversations.

According to four contractors from training firms Outlier and Alignerr, they witnessed sensitive personal information while combing through chats. These details included names, phone numbers, email addresses, gender, and personal interests. This information often surfaced either directly in user messages (which goes against Meta’s privacy policies) or was provided directly by Meta alongside conversation logs.

One contractor noted that they uncovered personal data in over half of the thousands of chats they analyzed weekly. Another two mentioned spotting selfies shared by users primarily from the U.S. and India.

Other tech giants like Google and OpenAI have also tasked contractors to assist in AI training; however, those who worked for Meta reported higher chances of encountering personal data during their tasks.

Contractors shared their experiences about users conversing intimately with the Meta AI chatbot, discussing everything from romantic interests to personal challenges. Some even shared their job positions and locations during these chats, which the contractors observed.

While there are valid concerns regarding the data privacy implications, Meta has stated it enforces “strict” policies for its employees and contractors that access personal data. We don’t allow access to personal data unless necessary, and we guide our contractors on proper handling procedures for any such information they might come across, a spokesperson from Meta shared with Business Insider.

Looking ahead, Meta is set to pour substantial resources into AI development, committing $66 billion to $72 billion in 2025 focused on evolving its AI operations.
