According to charity Action Against Stalking, one in six men and women have experienced stalking in the last 12 months. Children are also now equally as vulnerable, thanks to a new wave of cyber stalking.

Yet in the UK, only 1% of cases of harassment recorded by the police result in a charge and prosecution.

Here, Red speaks to two women who have experienced stalking first-hand and find out what you can do if stalking happens to you...

The letters were deeply personal, so it was easy to identify my ex as the author. He was fixated with the idea I had another boyfriend, and sent daily letters, texts and emails saying he hated me and he would kill himself if I didn’t reply.

Over one year I received 1000 pieces of threatening communication, and while he never physically approached or threatened me, the mental torture drove me to depression.

It affected my social life, I developed insomnia and my work suffered because I was on the edge all the time. I dreaded my phone beeping and began to hate living alone, because I was in constant fear of him turning up at the flat.

I reported it to the police at the insistence of my family. Eventually after a long and protracted battle he was given a restraining order. I received counselling and invaluable advice on how to cope with the situation from stalking charity, Paladin.

A spokesperson for the National Stalking Helpline says, 'The key steps to take if you think you’re being stalked are to talk to someone, record what’s happening by keeping a log of any contact and take your digital safety seriously.

'We also suggest varying your routine and if you feel genuinely unsafe for any reason, call 999. We want the police to be onboard as early as possible in these situations, because the sooner there’s a formal intervention the sooner the stalking is likely to stop. Stalkers don’t generally stop on their own.'

After weeks of daily messages (which I ignored) he contacted me to say he knew where my offices were because of a picture I had posted on my lunch break. I freaked out and blocked him immediately, but naively didn’t realise he might make another account and follow me again – which he did.

Eventually I asked Instagram to block his IP address, so even if he made a new account he wouldn’t be able to follow me. Sadly they couldn’t help as he wasn’t actually physically threatening me. In the end I deleted all my accounts.

It sounds silly to feel threatened by someone you’ve never met, but not knowing what he looked like made me wary of every man in the street.
