But, as we also know all too well, salty foods are pretty delicious – and hard to resist.

So, if you're looking to reduce your salt intake, then a new study by scientists at China's Third Military Medical University may pique your interest.

It turns out you might want to try eating spicier foods in order to curb your salt cravings...

After checking whether over 600 participants enjoyed spicy and salty flavours, the team checked whether their preferences were linked to blood pressure.

Eating foods that are rich in potassium is better than taking supplements. Slice a banana into your cereal or oatmeal for a potassium-rich addition. Incorporating flavorful herbs and spices into your daily diet can also help you cut back on your salt intake .

And, oddly enough, researchers found that those who ate more spicy foods had lower blood pressure and consumed less salt than those who enjoyed them least.

The team then scanned the volunteers' brains and found that the areas stimulated by salty and spicy foods overlap, and that spice further increases brain activity in parts of the brain activated by salt.

As a result, the team has concluded that spicy foods may make us more sensitive to the taste of salt, which ultimately means we eat less of it.

While further research is now needed, senior study author Dr Zhiming Zhu suggets that adding spices to your cooking could help you reduce salt intake without compromising on flavour.

'If you add some spices to your cooking, you can cook food that tastes good without using as much salt,' he wrote in the American Heart Association's journal Hypertension.
