And, while we all know the formula for weight loss is meant to be simple – eat less and move more – anyone who's tried to diet would also tell you that the reality is way more complicated.

But if you always assumed the easiest way to shed some weight was to carefully calorie count, then it might be time for a rethink.

That's according to fitness expert Joe Wicks (aka The Body Coach), whose Lean guides and 90-day diet plans are still the biggest thing in wellness.

In fact, Joe reckons that the traditional weight loss approach of counting calories is all wrong...

Speaking to The Sun to promote his new book, The Fat-Loss Plan, £16.99, Joe explained that he finds that whole dieting method 'outdated'.

And, if you were planning on trying a juice 'cleanse' or detox this January, Joe really wouldn't recommend it either.

'Brands get in touch and offer me silly money to promote their products,' he said. 'But I always have to think, "Do my followers really want to see me promote a juice or drink or cleansing tea-tox I don't think that's going to be good for them?"

'So why would I promote it?'

Instead, Joe prefers to focus on achieving a balanced diet.

'I don't list the calorie content of my recipes,' he said. 'Counting calories is an old-school, outdated approach to nutrition - and not all calories are equal.

Counting your calories over Christmas

Counting your calories over Christmas Christmas is a foodie's favourite festive time, where eating good things plays a central role in the celebrations. However, it's also the time of year where overindulgence is common. This doesn't have to translate to weight gain. It's a case of damage limitation. Simple steps can go a long way to reducing the impact festive celebrations have on your waistline. With the arrival of January comes the advertising of products suggesting you require help to detox your body. However, these products are misleading as your liver and two kidneys are constantly ridding the body of harmful or excess substances. To help your body detox ensure you are adequately hydrated.

'Who wants to have to track, monitor and obsess over hitting a certain daily calorie intake? Not me.'

And, if the idea of joining an expensive gym in order to get fit makes you want to break out in hives, then you'll be pleased to hear that Joe reckons working out at home can be just, if not more, effective...

'I believe working out from home is the future,' he said. 'We are getting busier and busier, we don't have the time or resources to get to the gym.'

Sounds much more appealing to us, too.
