A mother sparked a heated debate on a parenting forum by insisting she'd never put her daughter in a bikini because they're not appropriate for children.

The Mumsnet user explained that while she wouldn't 'bat an eyelid' if she saw a toddler running around naked or in their underwear, she feels dressing little girls in bikinis amounts to turning them into 'mini adults'.

The mother, known only by her username as GoodAfternoonSeattle, posted: 'Why does a 3 year old need something to cover their chest on the beach or at the pool??'

The Truth Behind Bikini Competitions

The Truth Behind Bikini Competitions We talked to competitors to find out what goes on behind the Instagrams. It happens to the best of us: We see an Instagram picture of someone from high school, nearly naked and looking strong as hell, and pause. Thirty minutes later, we've scrolled months back on their page, engrossed in a world of meal-prep containers, gym workouts, and show days. Bodybuilding competitions are incredibly popular right now, with some 15,000 women competing in National Physique Committee competitions alone every year.

Elizabeth Ashley said I totally agree that kids shouldn't be sexualized they're growing up way too fast and parents are letting their little girls wear bras and makeup before they need to. But one question, what' s wrong with a short wedge heel?

Step Two : If she persists, let her wear the bikini . She ' s at exactly the age when she starts to become sexually active. Now is the time to let her start taking baby steps into the adult world. let her wear a little makeup that you help her pick out, so it's appropriate.

While some Mumsnet users agreed that bikinis for little girls are 'all wrong', not all parents welcomed her criticism, with one fellow mother insisting she was being 'judgy' and said they are 'just for fun'.

GoodAfternoonSeattle asked other parents if she was being unreasonable for holding her belief.

She wrote: 'Personally I prefer my own daughter (who is three) to be covered on the beach so that she doesn't burn. I'd probably put her in one of those swimsuits that's like shorts and tshirt.

'I'd put her in a swimming costume at an indoor pool. I wouldn't bat an eyelid at a preschool aged child running around naked or in pants.

Some Mumsnet users were in agreement with her, saying they find two pieces for children strange.

One posted: 'I think bikinis on toddlers are ghastly! Bikini tops are for concealing/supporting boobs. Let toddlers wear something comfortable and free, they have plenty of time to wear bikinis when they hit puberty.'

Another wrote: 'My problem is with clothing that looks as though its been designed with an adult in mind.... Such as skimpy triangle bikini tops, shoes for toddlers with 3 inch heels.'
