‘Running is a very physically demanding sport that requires both strength and endurance,’ stresses Dr Sarah Duvall, a Physical Therapist, Certified Personal Trainer and Women's Health Specialist. ‘If you have hip or leg weakness or a lack of muscular endurance, the demand on the pelvic floor will go up to compensate.’

It’s thought that up to 30% of UK women are affected by pelvic floor problems with some experts calling it a silent epidemic. What you don’t want to do is run head first into these issues by pounding the pavements too soon.

It seems obvious but after labour you need to heal, regain strength - especially in your core - and if you have a c-section you’ll need to allow for your scar to heal both on the outside but also on the inside. It’s why women’s health experts are pushing for a return to running to be between 3- 6 months at the earliest, not the standard 6 weeks.

Wondering if you’re ready? According to Duvall you should be able to pass these tests before even thinking about lacing up:

You don’t need to be able to squat like Annie Thorisdottir but you should be able to manage 15-30 mini single leg squats with good form.

Single leg calf raise

Don’t worry, doing calf raises isn’t going to give you pins like an Olympic cyclist. What they will do is help with arch and foot strength. Can you do a single leg calf raise keeping your weight balanced through the ball of your foot, your big toe connected while not flipping to the outside of your foot as you lift? And, can you do 15-20 without your form slipping? If not, work on these.

If you’ve suffered from diastasis (that’s ab separation) then it’s important that you can manage this while moving. ‘I like to see someone learn how to engage their abdominals without bulging in their midline so I know they can engage them while pushing the buggy,’ says Duvall. ‘You don’t have to have perfect width or complete firmness in their midline, just an ability to manage the pressure.’

How should I run with a buggy?

The simple answer: with good form. Not only are you using your bodyweight to propel the weight of the pushchair-plus-baby forward, but you might be dealing with uneven terrain too. Having a few posture cues in your head can really help and ensure you run more like Mo than the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Duvall suggests:

  • Slightly lean forward with your whole body, like you’re doing a plank on the wall. Keep your neck elongated without jutting it forward. This helps you stay tall through your middle and manage pressure down on your pelvic floor.
  • Push with your glutes. To shift the focus here and away from pushing with your arms, lock your arms either slightly in front or with a small bend in your elbows at your sides.
  • Try and land lightly and quietly. If possible, do shorter steps and try to land more on your midfoot rather than your heel.

Stroller Tips: Take the stroller challenge! Pushing a stroller uphill can be a lot of work! Let’s dive into a few tips to make it easier. It’s all about those glutes! Instead of hunching, try leaning forward. Lock your arms either in front a bit or beside you and push from your glutes. Try to lean forward enough to keep your belly from pushing forward. Imagine lifting a string up through your head and come a little taller while keeping your forward lean. This will help prevent forward head posture and hunched forward shoulders. Be mindful of your pelvic floor. Do you feel bearing down when you push? If so, try and come taller and try not to push pressure down. Stroller Challenge: Get someone to snap a picture of you when you’re not looking so you can really see what you look like. A picture is worth a lot!!! Just be sure you’re not trying your hardest and you don’t know exactly when it’s going to happen. It took our tester less than 10 minutes to set up and use this buggy. The height of the handlebar is simple to adjust with plenty of options, which is ideal for multiple users. Advice on tyre pressure was missing, but this was solved with a quick Google.

We like the light reflector rims on the wheels and edging of the sun canopy, as it provides better visibility when on evening walks or runs. There’s plenty of storage at the base of the buggy too, and it zips up for added peace of mind when running over rough terrain. We think it would benefit from an extra storage pocket at hood height though for quick-grab items such as your phone or water bottle.

We found it easy to secure our little passenger thanks to the padded five-point harness and mesh panels in the seat ensure your tot doesn’t overheat – buggy aircon! We also like the magnetic-closure peekaboo window for checking on them without disturbing them. The one-handed recline adjustment was easy to do and offered many positions – except sitting bolt upright, which meant that our passenger leant forward a few times for a better view.

Our tester found it lightweight and easy to push when running, while the rear suspension coped exceptionally well on all terrains, with no complaints from the passenger. It’s simple to manoeuvre, thanks to the front swivel wheel, but this meant our tester had to ensure it didn’t veer off course when running. The handlebar wrist-strap makes you feel in control though, especially downhill, but it would benefit from being a tad longer. The brake on the handle was effective and in the ideal location, but it took some getting used to as you twist rather than squeeze to brake.

It’s simple to fold up and store, and by removing the rear wheels we managed to get it into the boot of a Mini Countryman without too much wrestling. The clip for locking it when folded was a little tricky to use though, and it felt like it could potentially break after repeated use.

The best thing about this buggy is its Speed3 Steering, which means the front wheel can be locked, swivel 360° or be partially locked, enabling you to run, jog or walk feeling fully in control –great news for beginner runners when you might run-walk more than continuously jog. There are clear step-by-step instructions for set up – it took our tester about 15 minutes - and there are plenty of handlebar height positions available.

Another big pro is the amount of on-board storage. Not only does it have a basket in the base (where you can handily store the supplied tyre pump) and a zip pocket for phones at handlebar height, it also has drink pockets for both user and passenger, which little hands can easily access.

The five-point padded safety harness kept our passenger secure, but we did find it took a little bit of effort to figure out, so you can’t do it in a hurry right away. The seat can recline in every position possible too, but the upright option was a bit tricky to manage single-handedly.

Our tester felt strong and confident when running, gliding over all of our test terrains due to the excellent three-wheel suspension. We found the larger length of the wrist strap useful too, as it allowed for a more comfortable running style. The brake is located between the rear wheels and was effective but would be better positioned on the handlebar for comfort and ease. It doesn’t feature a handbrake when stationary either. It’s easy to check on your little one though, thanks to the magnetic viewing window on the canopy.

We love that the fabric is made out of 100% recycled polyester, using 28 water bottles per buggy. It’s also quick to fold down and store, easily fitting into a car boot.

There are two sets of interchangeable rear wheels here: the meaty 16-inch wheels for off-road trails and the smaller 12-inch wheels for more urban routes. This buggy took slightly longer to set up (around 30 minutes), as there are more steps to follow in the instructions.

The buggy seat can fully recline as well as sit upright, depending on your passenger’s preference and there are plenty of handlebar height options, so ideal for multiple users. There’s a secure five-point harness too but this requires four clips, which proved tricky to use with a wriggly child.

Our tester found the buggy easy to manoeuvre, while also feeling sturdy and in control over bumpy ground thanks to good rear-wheel suspension. The brakes are easily accessible on the handlebars too, but we found them a bit squeaky in use. The front wheel can lock or swivel depending on whether you’re walking or running and there’s a hand-strap for added peace of mind when going downhill.

The magnetic window on the canopy made it easy to check in on our little passenger and we love the amount of storage available. There are two bottle holders, for you and little one, as well as a zipped basket and a variety of smaller outer pockets for quick-grab items. Our tester found it easy to collapse but it took up most of the room in the car boot. At 12.9kg, it was the heaviest on test and slightly bulkier than the others to store.
