The Fitbit Sense generated some series buzz from the moment its high-tech features were announced – so much so that it's been touted as the most advanced tracker ever released. That's a lot to live up to. WH's Junior Fitness Editor and resident tech junkie put the brand new smartwatch through it's paces. Here's her Fitbit Sense review.

The good:

  • Sleek, lightweight design
  • Better HR monitoring with PurePulse 2.0
  • Built-in GPS
  • Access to Fitbit Premium for 6 months with purchase
  • Spotify controls
  • Music storage with Deezer and Pandora
  • Up to 6 days of battery and vastly improved magnetic charger

The bad:

With functions that could do a lot more than just tracking your physical activity, fitness trackers like Fitbit have become a necessity for modern men. With so much to offer with every device, Fitbit has gone an extra mile to ensure that you never stop moving. And that ’s what the Flex model is all about.

You'll need more than just an app to track all of that . For something that tracks all three and costs less than 0, the FitBit Flex and Jawbone UP are your best bet. They take a two-pronged approach to tracking : each combines a sensor-packed wristband with a mobile app where you can view your

Stress management takes the spotlight

There are plenty of trackers that measure your stress using your heart rate and recovery data – but few of them are able to help you understand it. With its electrodermal activity sensor (the world's first on a tracker, Fitbit says) the Sense is able to measure tiny changes in the levels of sweat on your skin, and paint a more accurate picture for you.

It's not something that happens automatically, however. To get a reading, you have 2 options: conducting a 2-minute 'Quick Scan' on device, or using one of the guided mindfulness sessions on the Fitbit app. Either way, you'll need to site quietly somewhere, with one palm pressed over the watch face, where the sensors are.

Given that some of the top-tier Fitbit models can cost hundreds of dollars, you're not alone if you're looking for some affordable dupes. Designed much like the Fitbit Alta, this activity tracker is wildly-popular on Amazon for good reasons: It features heart rate tracking , can monitor your sleep, has

Rather than just tracking how many steps you take, the Charge HR can see exactly how hard you’re working. Fitness tracking devices are complicated at the moment, available in a crowded spectrum from simply tracking steps to high-end running watches which measure everything from the amount

After the fact, Fitbit uses the data to contribute towards your Stress Management Score, a number from 0 - 100. A higher score is good – it means your body is showing fewer physical signs of stress, Fitbit says.

The score is calculated based on responsiveness (how much strain your body is under based on your heart rate, heart rate variability and electrodermal activity from the EDA Scan app), exertion balance (impact of your physical activity), and sleep patterns (how well you’ve been sleeping).

If you have Fitbit Premium, the company's subscription service, you can take an even deeper dive into this data, and see what may be impacting that score (too many HIIT workouts, maybe?).

Whether you're into tracking that or not, the mindfulness element is something I really enjoyed. The Sense somehow elevates these moments of stillness as something that's just as important for your overall health as your workouts or your sleep. The guided mindfulness sessions available on Fitbit Premium – everything from 1-minute meditations to 45-minute visualisations – are great if you need some guidance.

Fitbit Sense: price, release date where to buy and the latest updates on Fitbit's new health smartwatch

Fitbit Sense: price, release date where to buy and the latest updates on Fitbit's new health smartwatch Fitbit Sense battles Apple with lower price, ECG, stress sensing and management and 6+ days battery lifeAnd as of the 14 September 2020, Fitbit has received 510(k) clearance from the FDA (in the US), as well as the CE marking in the European Union, for its electrocardiogram (ECG) app to assess heart rhythm for atrial fibrillation (AFib), meaning it's not just Fitbit saying the Sense can do all these, reassuringly.

Health is much broader in scope than Fit, acting as a repository for all of your medical data, not just the number laps your ran this morning. We ’ re unashamed fans of IFTTT (If This Then That ), and the service plugs into just about every fitness tracking API out there including Fitbit , Jawbone, Withings

Here are some tips that can help you get more out of your fitness trackers and related gadgets. The Fitbit Charge HR (8.11 at Amazon) also has a start/stop timer for activities When you think about tracking for the long term, it makes sense to use technology where it's possible, rather than just

SpO2 Clock face

One of the most talked about updates to the new Apple Watch Series 6 is the SpO2 sensor – but Fitbit has one too. The new feature will track oxygen saturation levels (how much oxygen is in your blood) while you sleep, which could indicate how difficult or easy it was for you to breathe during the night

It doesn't work quite the same way as Apple's though, in that right now, Fitbit only uses it as a sleep metric. Con: in order to use it, you'll have to switch to the new SpO2 clock face via the app. Pro: the clock face, and therefore SpO2 tracking, will be rolled out free to Premium Fitbit smartwatch users as well.

While it's interesting data, it doesn't really feel like there is much you can do with the information (we felt much to same about Apple's version of the feature in our Apple Watch Series 6 review). Knowledge of oxygen saturation levels is only really useful when it comes to identifying serious conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or heart problems, and Fitbit itself says their devices do not measure or display SpO2 values below 80 percent. A normal range is upwards of 90 while sleeping.

As more and more people loved the idea of staying in tune with their activity tracking , Fitness trackers became a Get your fitness tracking and your notifications all in one place. It just makes sense ! Now you can connect your Fitbit to your phone. It syncs up perfectly, so you can get notifications on

That leads us to LVL, a wrist worn wearable that can monitor hydration as well as track fitness , heart rate and sleep quality. Tracking on another level. Improving sleep quality is just one of the areas the LVL hopes to help It didn't want a big, bulky wearable that shone bright green lights like the Fitbits

A thermometer on your wrist

It's never been more handy to know whether you have a fever on not – but Fitbit's new temperature reading sensor wasn't designed only with These Strange Times in mind.

Knowing your baseline skin temperature (taken when you first wake up in the morning) is also incredibly useful in tracking your menstrual cycle. The hormonal changes that cause ovulation also results in a slightly raised temperature (usually about 0.5 degrees a day or 2 after ovulation) and your temperature will probably stay high until your next cycle begins.

It's worth noting that while this can help paint a more accurate picture of your cycle, it's not foolproof – Fitbit themselves admit that readings can be affected by significant changes in room temperature. So if you use cycle tracking as a method of contraception, or are using it to get pregnant, you're probably better off with a good old-fashioned thermometer (or better yet, an ovulation test).

That all sounds great – but is it still a fitness tracker?

At the core, the Fitbit Sense still comes equipped with all the step-counting, workout-tracking tech that we've come to know and love in the best-selling brand's devices. And with the latest iteration of Fitbit's PurePulse 2.0, you can bet the 20+ workout modes, your stats are going to be more accurate than ever.

The best cheap fitness tracker deals for October 2020: Garmin, Fitbit and more The best cheap fitness tracker deals for October 2020: Garmin, Fitbit and moreThe fitness tracker market is as crowded as it's ever been, and only getting busier with time. The benefit of that competition is that more and more devices are releasing that do a great job of tracking your wellbeing and fitness without costing a bomb.

Also on the menu is running, walking and biking tracked by the Sense's built-in GPS – a feature we've only seen in the old Ionic and the Fitbit Charge 4. Fitbit has leveraged this feature to give you a GPS-powered heat map of your different heart rate zones during your route after your workout, to help you to gauge your effort and help you better train against various terrain.

More noteworthy Fitbit Sense features

  • Active Zone Minutes, a useful metric that stacks your activity and exercise up against government recommended activity guidelines (read more in our Fitbit Charge 4 review)
  • Cardio Fitness Score
  • In-depth sleep stage tracking and Sleep Score
  • Always-on display
  • Spotify controls and music storage with Deezer and Pandora
  • Bluetooth wireless headphone pairing

Fitbit Sense review: the verdict

There's no doubt about it: the Fitbit Sense is the closest we've ever seen to a holistic health tracker. It offers a myriad of health metrics, all translated into easy-to-understand and digest visualisations and graphs in the user-friendly Fitbit app.

The best part about the Sense is the effort Fitbit has made to really allow you to do something with your data. Stress levels too high? There are meditations in-app that could help. Want to improve your Cardio Fitness Score? Follow along with one of the in-app workouts. If you're looking to improve your lifestyle for the better, the Fitbit Sense will give you the tools – and the motivation – to do that.

Having said that, most of the features are only available with Fitbit Premium (you'll get that for free for 6 months when you buy a Sense, but after that, it'll cost £7.99 per month). It's also not cheap – at £299, it's actually pricier than the newly released Apple Watch SE.

If you're looking for a great fitness tracker, but aren't interested in the stress monitoring and mindfulness bells and whistles, you may be better off looking to the Fitbit Versa 3. But if injecting a bit of zen into your life is top priority, the Sense could be your new best friend.
