A new study has found that drinking tea can significantly lower blood pressure.
Researchers at the University of Reading and Cambridge University have found that foods and drinks such as tea, apples and berries are high in flavonoids, and may reduce the risk of high blood pressure.
High blood pressure can increase the chances of being diagnosed with a serious disease, such as coronary heart disease or kidney disease, if left untreated.
The team studied the diets of more than 25,000 people in the UK, and compared what they ate with their blood pressure.
Previous studies relied on participants' diet reporting, but this research is the first of its kind to measure flavonoid intake using nutritional biomarkers.

People who consumed the most flavonoids were twice as likely to have a better blood pressure reading than those who consumed the least, the long-term study found.
And the effects were more pronounced in people with hypertension.
“We are delighted to see that in our study, there is a significant association between the consumption of flavonoids and lower blood pressure,” explained Professor Gunter Kuhnle, study leader.
The team also suggested that if people increased their intake of flavonoids, it could lead to a huge reduction in cardiovascular problems and therefore heart disease and stroke.
