NIH scientists discover rare genetic inflammatory condition in men

NIH scientists discover rare genetic inflammatory condition in men Hundreds of men in the US may be living with a potentially deadly inflammatory condition just discovered by National Institutes of Health scientists, due to a rare genetic mutation. The new disease, dubbed VEXAS, causes recurring blood clots, fevers, inflammation and lung damage - in men, specifically.

" Understanding the molecular basis of these diseases is crucial before we can seek new treatments for these and other inflammatory skin diseases." June 19, 2017 — Researchers have identified mutations in a gene called CARD11 that lead to atopic dermatitis, or eczema , an allergic skin disease.

Eczema can create incredibly irritated and tender skin pretty much anywhere on your body. Like other forms of eczema , hand eczema can get worse due to irritants like mold, pet dander, cold and dry air, rough fabrics “This leads to dryness, disruption of your skin barrier, and the cycle of damage

A potential cure for eczema and psoriasis is on the horizon after scientists discovered the cause of the skin inflammation at the heart of the conditions.

Researchers have found that the blood vessel cells and immune cells in the skin of people people with these diseases work together in a way that summons far too many inflammatory white blood cells, causing inflammation.

While this intense white cell recruitment process helps skin develop in the embryo, it normally stops quite quickly, when its no longer useful.

Long-term inflammation can lead to a number of symptoms and affect your body in many ways. Symptoms of common inflammatory conditions . Symptoms can also vary depending on the condition that has an inflammatory component. Other treatment options for inflammation .

Over time, chronic inflammation can cause DNA damage and lead to some forms of cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. Corticosteroids, such as cortisone and prednisone, may be prescribed for inflammatory conditions , such as asthma and arthritis.

But not in the case of people with inflammatory skin disease, when the process carries on, the research finds.

Huge leap in understanding

“This is a huge leap in our understanding of inflammatory skin disease and offers new routes for finding treatments,” said Professor Muzlifah Haniffa, of Newcastle University.

“Specific molecular signals are sent by healthy developing skin to summon immune cells and form a protective layer. We were amazed to see that eczema and psoriasis skin cells were sending the same molecular signals, which could overactive immune cells and cause the disease. This has never been seen before,” she said.

By providing a completely new understanding of inflammatory disease, the findings also open up new avenues to develop treatments for other inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, she said.

We’ve outlined eight potential causes of nipple soreness – from hormonal fluctuations to potentially more severe underlying problems – and how you can treat it.

"Major advances in understanding the immune system launched the new field of bioelectronic medicine, using devices targeting nerves to replace drugs. Non-invasive bioelectronic treatments have been limited until now," said Kevin J. Tracey, MD, president and CEO of the Feinstein Institute and

Timescale for treatments

The first of the new treatments for eczema and psoriasis could potentially become available in as little as five years, although it is still far too early to say for certain whether any treatment would be successful or how long it might take to develop and test, researchers cautioned.

Inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic eczema and psoriasis are chronic conditions, where the immune system becomes overactive, causing itchy or flaky skin that can be very painful and prone to infection.

These conditions can have significant impact on people’s lives, but the trigger is unknown and there is no cure, with treatments only helping to relieve the symptoms, not the cause.

The research also involved scientists from the Wellcome Sanger Institute and King’s College London and is published in the journal Science.

The findings emerged as part of a global Human Cell Atlas effort to map every cell type in the human body. Here, the scientists produced a highly detailed map of the skin that could provide a template for regenerative medicine, helping researchers grow skin in the laboratory more effectively.

Eczema treatment: Expert's top tips for preventing a flare-up during winter .
ECZEMA flare-ups tend to be more common during winter with changing temperatures and dry air. It's estimated 15 million Britons suffer from the condition. So what's the best way to treat the condition? Chemist Bruce Green offers his top tips.Eczema flares up because the skin can't stay moist on it's own, and can be caused by wearing too many layers of clothing, taking hot baths, or using too many bed coverings, and worsened by skin irritants, infections, stress and exposure to allergens such as dust or pet hair.
