Spice Girl Mel C has opened up about the realities of global fame in her new book Who I Am, sharing the health issues that came with it, and how she worried it may go too far The 48 year old singer, who recently split from her boyfriend of seven years, says despite her success behind the scenes she was quietly battling depression, anorexia and binge eating.
has shared how a cruel remark during the early Spice Girls days sparked her eating disorder. Mel - Sporty Spice - says a comment about her thighs sparked her obsession with restricting food.
The mum-of-one, 48, was onLoose Women on Friday December 2. "The Spice Girls, what we achieved broke barriers," Mel said to the panel.
She added: "We were blazing this trail and it's because we faced challenges. We faced sexism early on and that put fire in our bellies and thank goodness for that because we went out there and changed things."

"It was really early on in the Spice Girls journey and I did a backflip," Mel explained to Kaye Adams, Stacey Solomon, Charlene White, Judi Love and Nadia Sawalha today.
She continued: "Someone commented how they were surprised i could do a backflip with 'thighs that big'. I never had any body image issues up until that point, i was what we would deem as slim person."
She explained: "At that point the thought that I didn't look right was so terrifying to me. I was thinking 'do I deserve this? Am I right to be doing this?' That is what started me eliminating food groups - it started quite innocently - and then there were other catalysts along the way."

She told Women’s Health back in 2019 about her issues with food and her body. Mel said at the time: "I didn’t ever allow people to speak about diets in our house.
"I think one of the positives of having gone through an eating disorder is that I’m very conscious of how I speak around her." Mel added: "That positive language – it’s a habit now."
