You won't be kept awake by training in the evening. That's an old lie that morning people cooked up with their elaborate breakfasts while we were hitting the snooze button and getting a well-deserved rest. Other than a means for an allowance, I never understood why she ordered us to complete this task every day. A seamstress in her spare time, my mom sewed sets of matching throw pillows for my bedding ensemble, making the chore all the more tedious on busy school mornings.

But in a tiny dorm room, even a few pillows strewn about looked messy and took up valuable floorspace, so I started making up my bed before class every day.

As much as I hated to admit it, my mom was right—completing this one simple task at the beginning of each day made me feel like I had accomplished something.
