Why Certain Sounds Drive You Crazy | Opinion

Why Certain Sounds Drive You Crazy | Opinion Misophonia is a neurophysiological condition in which people have a disproportionately negative reaction to specific sounds. People with the condition are aware that they overreact to certain sounds, it’s just that their reaction is not within their control. The trigger sounds that people with misophonia react to can vary from person to person. However, some categories are more common than others and they tend to be related to the mouth or eating, breathing or nasal sounds and finger or hand sounds. Evidence suggests that this aversion develops in childhood and tends to get worse over time.

Sounds and Audio. Finally ! How To Stop Annoying ‘ Plink Plink ’ Sound Of Dripping Tap Based On Science. admin. 2018-06-22.

An experiment had finally figured out what produces the annoying ‘ plink plink ’ sound of water from a dripping faucet or leaky roof. Finally ! This is how to stop a leaky tap making that tedious ‘ plink ’ sound .

Scientists at the University of Cambridge have solved the enigma behind the recognisable household sound of dripping water – and, most importantly, revealed how to stop it.: Why a leaky tap makes that annoying ‘plink’ sound © Getty Images Why a leaky tap makes that annoying ‘plink’ sound If you’ve ever had a time when you've been trying to sleep and all you can hear is the ‘plink, plink’ sounds of relentlessly dripping water coming from your bathroom sink or kitchen tap, you’ll know it’s enough to drive anyone mad.

But now, scientists have solved the enigma behind the recognisable household sound – and, most importantly, revealed how to stop it.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge used ultra-high-speed cameras and modern audio capture techniques to discover what causes the annoying drip. It turns out that the noise isn’t actually caused by the water droplet itself hitting a liquid surface but resonant oscillations of a trapped air bubble beneath the water’s surface.

Why You Should Make Your Bed Every Morning

Why You Should Make Your Bed Every Morning Think about the first item on your to-do list every day. Walking the dog? Making breakfast? Dropping off the kids at school? Completing an assignment at work? There’s one daily chore that I’ve always dreaded: making my bed. Southern bedrooms are known for being stylish, dressed with traditional accents like upholstered headboards, plush sets of linens, monogrammed shams. A well-made bed provides a bedroom with a sense of structure; it’s a put-together retreat away from the chaos of everyday life outside of it.

This bubble causes the surface of the water to vibrate, which triggers the sound.

But never fear as there is a very simple solution to stop the noise and you’ll find it in your kitchen cupboards…

Published by the journal Scientific Reports, the study revealed that altering the surface tension of the liquid can stop the sound. So just add washing-up liquid to the water lying in the sink or bucket. This will reduce surface tension and should prevent the irritating 'plink' noise.

My Mum Used To Say "Stop Wishing Your Life Away". She Had A Point.

My Mum Used To Say I can remember the first time I heard the words. I was 16 and miserable because it was termtime and I was in a long-distance relationship with a 20-year-old who lived in London while I was 200 miles up north in the suburbs of Liverpool. I was moping around the house and my mum, probably fed up of living in a waiting room for teenage love, told me to "stop wishing your life away". It had never occurred to me that was what I was doing.

“A lot of work has been done on the physical mechanics of a dripping tap, but not very much has been done on the sound,” said Dr Anurag Agarwal of Cambridge’s Department of Engineering, who led the study.

“But thanks to modern video and audio technology, we can finally find out exactly where the sound is coming from, which may help us to stop it.”

After visiting a friend who was dealing with a small leak in the roof of his house, Agarwal decided to investigate the sound further to find its source.

Unlike previous studies, the new research has shown that the sound is not a result of the impact itself or the formation of a cavity in the liquid but the trapped air bubble. The underwater bubble drives the airborne sound waves.

Now scientists are claiming to have ‘solved the riddle’ of what makes taps drip and how the solution to stopping the infernal noise could be lurking in most people’s cupboards. Researchers from the University of Cambridge said the ‘ plink , plink ’ sound produced by a water droplet hitting a liquid

I have really obnoxiously loud hips, probably because I had displaced hips as a baby or maybe because of the years I spent as a ballet dancer. Still, whenever I crack my hips on demand, it gets a reaction, because the sound grosses people out.
