Scientists from Boston University School of Medicine compared the 50 celebrities who were listed in People magazine's 'World's Most Beautiful' list in 1990 with the 135 featured in the 2017 ranking. While the average age of those named the most beautiful was 33.2 around 27 years ago, it was found to be 38.9 this year.

The research, published in the JAMA Dermatology journal, also showed the most recent People ranking has become more diverse, with the proportion of nonwhite celebrities increasing from 24 percent in 1990 to 40 percent in 2017. Mixed race celebrities were represented by just one person in 1990 but this year, that figure rose to 14.

'The mass media platform has for years introduced certain criteria for what constitutes beauty,' Dr Neelam Vashi, from Boston University School of Medicine, said of the results.

'Through an examination of the WMB (World's Most Beautiful) issue of People, we found that these beauty standards are evolving as people learn how to integrate the effects of media with exposure to new cultures and different norms.'
