Sian Robson, a university manager from Ashford, Kent was alerted to the label in the woolly hat thanks to her 13-year-old daughter Caitlin.

The item, which had come from the retailer Missguided, had a small note at the bottom of the washing instructions which read:

...or give this to your mum she'll wash it.

Sian shared a picture of the image on social media. She queried why someone's dad couldn't handle the washing.

What is obviously intended as a joke has only come across as short-sighted by a brand who claim to be empowering for women.

Talking to the Sun, Sian said:

"At first, I didn't believe that a female fashion brand would put something like that on a product.

My daughter told me to look at the washing instructions in her hat because they are awful.

It's not something you would expect to see.

I know they're trying to be funny but it's a bit naff.

It just didn't sit right with me. I looked on the Missguided website and I noticed they were all for promoting girl power.

They seem like a brand that want to encourage young women to break stereotypes so I'm not sure why they would have something like this in their clothing."

A MOTHER was left fuming after finding instructions on her teenage daughter ’ s hat that read: “Give this to your mum, she’ll wash it”. “I’m not a person who complains a lot about things being sexist but I can see that these instructions aren’t right.

A mother of two was left furious after finding sexist washing instructions in her daughter ' s hat . Sian Robson, 52, found that the label inside 13-year-old Caitlin's winter hat suggests quite clearly that 'mum' does the cleaning.

She goes on to add that the company should be pointing out that there is nothing to be embarrassed about if men do the washing in a household and that she would like to see the label removed from the product.

In addition, she was concerned that the note might upset some people who do not have a mum or parent to do their washing for them.

Missguided say on their website that they are commited to:

"empower females globally to be confident in themselves and be who they want to be."

The MailOnline reported that the brand declined to comment when contacted.

indy100 have contacted Missguided for a statement on the subject.
