Return to the ‘80s

While the hair trends of the 1980s don’t always get the best rep, Myles Lewis, owner of Myles & Co and OSMO brand ambassador, is adamant long hair is about to make a major comeback.

“Over much of 2019, we have been toying with styles, but nothing has stuck firmly like the very popular crop and blunt fringe partnered with a skin fade or taper,” he told us. “My forecast for 2020 in the male hair sector is that we will see styles inspired by the mid-‘80s. Think Steve Harrington on the TV show Stranger Things, as portrayed by Joe Keery - big powerful, longer hair with a more relaxed stance on styling, working more with a natural growth pattern and lighter finishing product.”

For those with Afro-Caribbean hair texture, Justin Carr, owner of That Feeling and OSMO brand ambassador, expects the current trend for growing the locks long and having them styled into plaits, twists, finger twists, cornrows or dreads will continue.

“People with this type of hair tend to do a style with a slightly edgy look to it as everyone likes to stand out and be different,” he said. “The majority of these trends are influenced by rappers in music videos and the culture which will continue in the present and the future. I also feel the clean-cut and classic look (hair one level taper) will come back in fashion for people opting for a simple, natural vibe.”

Creative haircuts

As for European and Asian hair textures, Justin predicts we will soon begin seeing men embrace much bolder designs.

“I feel people will grow their hair longer to give the hair extra movement with a fade or different designs,” the expert mused. “These are currently already happening, but I feel there will be a bigger push towards it.
