Scots have been ordered to wear face coverings inside shops from today as the country continues to battle the coronavirus pandemic.

A dentist has shared a quick and easy trick for making regular face masks fit better and provide more protection.

Different regulations apply to different parts of the UK, but face coverings have become mandatory in many settings.

The UK Government is advising people to wear a face covering in enclosed public spaces where social distancing may be difficult and where you come into contact with people you do not normally meet.

Brits are also being urged to check that they are wearing their masks correctly, with the Government also advising that the mask should "fit comfortably but securely against the side of the face".

But regular disposable face masks aren't always the best for protection, and can leave some gaps at the side of the mask.

One medical expert has revealed how to tighten your mask if you don't feel that it's giving you enough protection - watch the video at the top of the article .

Posting on her TikTok, Dr Olivia Cuid has given a tutorial on how tying knots in your mask can make it more snug.

She said: "Start with washing your hands.

"You want to fold your mask in half, and take the ear loops on each side and tie a knot.

"You do want to tie that knot as close as possible to the corners of your mask so that it's nice and secured.

Dr Cuid then explained that the openings on the sides of the mask need to be tucked in, which then gives better protection.

The simple hack went viral on Dr Cuid's TikTok, with the video receiving more than 2.7 million views.
