The skincare industry is mourning the loss of one of its brightest innovators with the death of Alpha-H founder Michelle Doherty.

The New Zealand native, who set up her world-renowned company after moving to Australia in 1995, has passed away after a two-year battle with cancer.

She leaves behind a brand that has become synonymous with delivering the desired results, most notably in the form of the iconic Liquid Gold – a bottle of which is sold every 30 seconds.

Shannen Doherty announces she will have surgery to battle her breast cancer. Her cancer has cost her the life she dreamed of having.

It started from humble beginnings, with Michelle determined to create skincare that tackled her chronic acne. She came up with the idea after discovering wonder ingredient glycolic acid, from the alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) group, which, although widely used today, was nearly unheard of in the early ‘90s.

After seeing first-hand how much it improved her acne, which she had suffered with for over a decade, Michelle and husband Dean embarked on their Alpha-H journey from their garage.

“When we moved to Australia from New Zealand 21 years ago, the heartbreak we felt and the unknowing minefield that we were stepping onto when we arrived in Australia,” Michelle previously told Cover Media of her and husband Dean’s journey into the unknown. “We got to the carousel with our bags, and that’s all we had and very few dollars in the bank. But we had a dream of reaching out to people. Honestly, we just had nothing in the bank and it was because we believed in what we were doing, and we believed in the life-changing experience that fell into my lap that set us on this journey. We’ve faced some pretty big ups and downs but because of everyone’s belief in us we now are in a position where we can thank you all and really continue to grow as a brand and make meaningful choices as a professional company for all of the people we get to touch in their lives.”

Initially, only pharmacies would stock Alpha-H as beauty stores were put off by the use of acid.

But now skincare savvy customers know just how important AHAs and BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) are for maintaining healthy-looking skin.

Alpha-H hero ingredient glycolic acid works as an exfoliator, removing dead cells from the surface of the skin, with Liquid Gold dubbed a facial in a bottle.

In the 25 years since Alpha-H was founded, innovative skincare that really works has been the cornerstone of the brand, which is trusted and loved by the likes of Kylie Minogue, among millions of others.
