Face masks could soon be an everyday sight in Britain as health officials admit that they are reconsidering their advice for people not to wear The West, however, is new to the idea and the coronavirus pandemic has triggered widespread use of face coverings in the US, France and Spain.

"Most people with asthma, even if it’s severe, can manage to wear a face mask for a short period of time, and shouldn't worry if they need to wear one."

Face coverings may reduce the risk of spreading infection by protecting people you come into contact with, but they do not replace social distancing measures.

People are also still advised to wash their hands regularly and keep 2m away from those not in their household to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

All four UK nations are now recommending, and in some cases making it the law, that people wear a face covering in enclosed spaces, where:

  • social distancing may not be possible
  • you may come into contact with people you don’t normally meet.

Do I have to wear a face covering if I have asthma?

Some people with asthma have told Asthma UK that face coverings can make breathing feel more difficult, which might be uncomfortable. They advise wearing a face covering at home, or on a short walk around the block first. It might not feel comfortable straight away, so give it a chance.

You can also experiment with different types of mask – some are easier to wear than others. Sometimes the feeling of wearing a face mask might take a bit of getting used to, but trying different types and starting with short periods of time can help you feel more comfortable.

They also say there isn’t a blanket rule about face covering exemptions for everyone with asthma. But if you find it impossible to wear a face covering for health reasons, you don’t have to wear one. An example of this might be if a mask makes you too breathless.

It’s Been 7 Months & I’m Still Sick – We Need To Take Long COVID Seriously Jessica, 27, was hospitalised with COVID-19 in mid March after her mother fell ill. Though she has mild asthma (often triggered by hay fever), it was never something she considered life-threatening and she has no other pre-existing health conditions. Despite this, the coronavirus hit her like a ton of bricks. Months later, she is still feeling the impact on a daily basis, both physically and mentally. “I still don’t feel 100%,” says Jessica. “I said to my doctor only a few weeks ago that it feels like I have a different pair of lungs… Some days I’ll be fine but then another day, walking up the many stairs to my bedroom will absolutely knacker me and I have to sit down for a whil

The World Health Organization says that children aged 12 and over should wear a face covering under the same conditions as adults, in situations where social distancing isn’t possible.

However, exemptions still apply. If your child finds it impossible to wear a face covering, they do not have to wear one and shouldn’t have to routinely prove their exemption.

If a child is worried about wearing a mask, Asthma UK advise that they also practise at home. If they find it impossible you might also need to explain this to your child’s school.

Travelling without a face covering

Face masks are law on public transport. Northern Ireland's public transport provider, Translink, says those who  have a condition which means they can't wear a face covering - they can explain this to staff if asked.

A Translink spokesperson said: " Numbers complying with the new regulations governing face coverings on public transport across Northern Ireland have climbed to over 85%, as more and more people adapt to the new culture and recognise it is simply the right thing to do.

"We would appeal for understanding and patience for those people who are exempt for a range of medical reasons which cannot always be seen.  Passengers aged under 13 are also exempt. There is no need to get a letter from a doctor or other official to show that you are exempt from wearing a face covering. If you have a condition which means you cannot wear a face covering, you can explain this verbally to Translink staff if asked.

"Our staff continue to help passengers understand the guidance and to encourage their us. We wish to thank our passengers for supporting this measure. We will continue to engage as more people return to the workplace over the coming weeks."

Download a face covering exemption card or badge

In Northern Ireland the government has said people who are exempt from wearing a face covering should not be routinely asked to prove their exemption.

However, some people may feel more comfortable showing an exemption card, badge or home-made sign that says they do not have to wear a face covering. This is a personal choice and you don’t have to do this under the law.

Asthma UK has a downloadable card below that you can show on your phone or other device that explains why you're not wearing a face covering. They cannot print out and send this card to you.

They ask people only use an exemption card if you really can’t wear a face covering because it makes it difficult to breathe, or causes panic or distress.
