The first product from IKEA's new KARISMATISK collection with British pattern and textile designer, Zandra Rhodes, has been revealed – and it's a fashionably pink take on the iconic blue FRAKTA carrier bag.

KARISMATISK is a collection of 26 unique and expressive pieces for those bravely mixing and matching colours and patterns, and those still working up the courage to go full-pattern.

Launching in stores from September 2021, the KARISMATISK carrier bag is Zandra’s take on FRAKTA, where fashion and function go hand in hand. IKEA describes it as a 'multifunctional bag' made from 80 per cent recycled polyester. It has a bold and playful design with a colourful pop of pink, representing Zandra's recognisable style.

Images have been released of the design sketch, and it appears there are two versions; a mini FRAKTA bag and a larger shoulder bag.

Zandra, who has been a notorious figurehead of the UK fashion industry for five decades, says the design process has been organic and genuine, something which is seen throughout the entire collection.

'The FRAKTA bag is IKEA! The bag could not be left out of the KARISMATISK collection and I was so excited to have my take on one of the most famous and identifiable IKEA products,' Zandra explains.

The use of patterns and colour is an easy and affordable way to update your space and express your personality at home, so as part of the collaboration, IKEA is exploring how Zandra’s vibrant style and bold patterns can be designed in a home context.

'Zandra's world of patterns and colour and the values she lives her life by inspired the IKEA team, who encouraged Zandra to be true to her very functional, thrifty, repurpose habits,' says the Swedish furniture retailer.

The partnership was first announced at IKEA's Democratic Design Day back in June 2019.

IKEA's ever-popular FRAKTA bag has had many transformations over the years, including a cardboard FRAKTA tote bag by Virgil Abloh and a contemporary stylish update from HAY. Ikea often release a limited edition rainbow version of FRAKTA for Pride each year, and the blue carrier bag has even been redesigned as a cap.
