VELVET WITH BRAINS

If you’d asked me to pick the fabric least likely ever to be chic again, I might well have said corduroy. Yet it is officially ‘in’ according to Stella McCartney and Chanel.

The modern fabric emerged in the late 18th century, when it was worn by factory workers in the North during the Industrial Revolution.

It became a robust choice for farmers before Jane Birkin gave it a fashionable edge in the 1970s. For decades since it’s been left on the shelf, but now it’s got the sophisticated upper hand on denim. Consider it a velvet with brains, since it was traditionally worn by bookish types.

NEW SHAPELY FIT

It’s hard to justify ‘of the moment’ trends, but this one earned a place in my wardrobe because it’s cosy and hard-wearing. Vintage cords quickly lost their shape, but today’s are super-soft, with lots of give for a comfortable fit.

Gallery: Every woman needs a staple slip dress - here are 10 to buy now (Harper's Bazaar (UK))

a person riding a skate board on a city street: The slip dress is one of the few items that's managed to achieve staple status in recent years. See, the mark of a true capsule piece is not just in its timeless appeal, but the ability to be dressed up and down effortlessly. Versatility is everything.Back in the Nineties, when designers like Calvin Klein and Narciso Rodriguez introduced us to this 'underwear-as-outerwear' trend, it was seen as a risqué evening look – and most definitely not daywear. Things have since changed: in an ever decreasingly formal society (exacerbated by our current WFH situation), the boundaries between eveningwear and casualwear are blurring. By ridding your wardrobe of its 'day' and 'night' limitations, you can get more experimental with weekend looks and shop more sustainably. And the slip dress epitomes this kind of fluid styling: cut from lustrous bias-cut fabric and strung from slender spaghetti straps, it has a louche elegance that's both sexy and grungy all at the same time. Depending on what you style it with, of course. Worn solo it can be strikingly minimalist (just add a sleek bun and strappy sandals) or rebellious (think Doc Martens). But most impressive of all, is this piece's multitasking abilities – throw a blazer over the top to create structure, underpin it with white T-shirts and black turtlenecks, or layer a sweater over the top to create an on-trend slip skirt. Then, simply swap between heels, boots and trainers depending on the occasion.Naturally, we'd recommend starting with a simple black number for maximum versatility, but more playful designs from the likes of Cushnie, Dannijo and Ann Demeulemeester are hard to resist. We can assure you, whichever you opt to buy, it will still be bang on trend in years to come – that's the beauty of a true staple.

Corduroy’s versatility lends itself to evening, too — something to do with those vertical lines that always look sharp and team well with laces and satins.

GO FOR SKINNY STRIPES

Going top-to-toe in a chunky cord trouser-suit is how the celebs are doing it. Victoria Beckham has a powder blue version in her current collection. But the trousers alone will do just fine. Alexa Chung wore a similar pair to these Brora ones I’m wearing: fine stripes are more flattering to legs than wide ones, as is a loose-fitting, flared style.

CHOOSE JEWEL TONES

Winter whites are big, and if you’re brave there are cream and pale neutrals around (look at this elegant biscuit shade, below right, from The White Company).

The reality, however, is that darker tones are more practical, especially for a winter of outdoor socialising. Look for blacks and blues if you want a subtle, stylish break from jeans.
