The Best Winter Base Layers for Runners. To be a badass runner year-round, you need a versatile base layer —a long - sleeve shirt that will get you out the door and protect your skin in the harshest of conditions.

A base layer is a long or short- sleeved shirt you’ll wear to help keep you comfy and warm when running in cold weather. The best base layers keep you warm and dry, but not hot or uncomfortable. They’ll draw body heat away from your torso while also protecting you from cold and wet weather.

A baselayer is the foundation of any good layering system, the standard approach to dressing for almost all sustained outdoor pursuits, from hiking and hillwalking to climbing, mountaineering and skiing. Designed to wick away sweat speedily, a baselayer will help you stay dry, unlike a cotton T-shirt. It can also provide excellent temperature regulation, keeping you cool in hot conditions and warm in cold weather. Long-sleeved baselayers are a great choice for when you need added protection, either from harmful UV rays or from chilly winds and colder temperatures.

Baselayers often seem to get the least attention, even though you’re guaranteed to be wearing one all day, unlike a waterproof jacket or a fleece. They also have to cope with rigorous demands – ideally a baselayer should keep you warm when it’s cold but cool when it’s hot, while also ensuring that you stay dry and comfortable all day long. Paramo’s solution is a reversible synthetic fabric called Parameta T+. It’s a typically considered approach from the brand, and one that has proven its value – in fact, Trail first reviewed the Cambia top over a decade ago. It’s still as good now as it was then. One side of the fabric has a slightly textured surface to trap warm air and provide greater insulation. The smoother reverse face pulls sweat away from the skin but then holds moisture there to evaporate, providing cooling. This adds versatility for year-round use, although the relaxed cut means that the Cambia isn’t as thermally efficient as some layers. On the other hand, that makes it very comfortable. Our only real caveat is that the polyester fabric has no odour-control treatment, so after a big day in the hills it isn’t the freshest.

Helly Hansen Lifa Active Solen

A comfortable and breathable lightweight layer with best-in-class sun protection

It’s fair to say that Helly Hansen revolutionised baselayers when they launched their Lifa synthetics back in 1970. This the first technical ‘thermal’ undershirt specifically designed for outdoor pursuits, from hiking to skiing. It was relatively affordable compared to the premium silk underwear of the time too. The major drawback, as people soon found out, was that after a while it absolutely reeked, becoming known as the ‘smelly Helly’. Still, the positives far outweighed this slightly unfortunate negative. And since then, new odour-control technologies have helped to conquer the stink. The latest innovation is S.Café, which infuses used coffee grounds into the garment fibres to provide natural odour control. It also boosts moisture evaporation and sun protection, resulting in an impressive UPF rating of 50+. It’s a permanent process too, so it won’t wash out or wear out. And though it sounds like marketing spiel, it seems to work. That makes the Lifa Active Solen layers a great option for trekking, hillwalking or even trail running in warmer weather. The fabric is a superlight, highly breathable blend of recycled polyester and polypropylene that wicks away moisture very effectively, keeping you cool and dry. It’s very soft and comfortable too, aided by flatlock seams and a semi-relaxed cut. For summer hiking, this is a winner, with decent eco credentials for a synthetic layer too.

Smartwool 150 merino baselayer

Extremely comfortable, excellent performance and a versatile cut

Quite simply, this is one of the most comfortable baselayers we’ve ever tested. The easy-wearing fit offers great coverage and a trim silhouette that isn’t too body-hugging. A more relaxed cut means it isn’t quite as thermally efficient as some layers, but on the flip side this adds versatility – in fact, we found ourselves wearing this layer every day, whether we were going hillwalking or not. And there are plenty of performance-orientated details if you look for them. Raglan sleeves eliminate shoulder seams, while flatlock stitching reduces chafing. Smartwool’s fabric is also pretty advanced. Merino fibres are wrapped around a nylon core, so you still get the softness of fine wool next to your skin, as well as merino’s other benefits. Yet the nylon content adds durability and helps the garment keep its shape – so it doesn’t go baggy, a common complaint about pure merino layers. We think this makes the Smartwool 150 range the most effective and durable lightweight merino layers around. It does of course add a synthetic fibre to the mix, which is a slight drawback in environmental terms. On the other hand, Smartwool’s merino is ethically sourced and sustainable. That ensures humane welfare standards for sheep flocks, plus fair treatment for farmers that means they won’t get fleeced.

Montane Sabre

Ideal baselayer for active pursuits in milder conditions

The Sabre is part of Montane’s Via trail-running range, and this is therefore a baselayer that prioritises lightweight breathability over warmth, reflecting its intended use for high-output activity. However, it still has plenty of useful features, including a Polygiene permanent anti-microbial treatment so it doesn’t get smelly easily. The closer fit means this is a true next-to-skin layer, maximising the efficiency of the fabric. The body is also a little longer than some, so it doesn’t ride up easily. It is an exceptionally lightweight garment and for mountain running or fast-paced activity in mild conditions this is a good option.

Columbia Men's Midweight Stretch Long Sleeve Half Zip

Lightweight yet surprisingly warm, with a technical four-way stretch fabric

Despite its light weight and thin synthetic fabric, this long-sleeved layer offers more warmth than most similar weight layers thanks to Columbia’s Omni-Heat technology with thermal reflective material, which places metallic dots on the inner surface of the fabric to reflect the wearer’s body heat. Though it’s not a miracle technology, it does seem to have a noticeable effect, boosting core warmth. The fabric is also moisture-wicking and very stretchy, which aids comfort despite the performance-focused athletic fit. There is also an anti-microbial treatment to protect against odour-causing bacteria, meaning this layer should stay fresher for longer. All in all, there’s lots to like, particularly the deep half-zip at the neck and useful thumb loops – which are both features that add versatility and practicality.

What should I look for in a baselayer T-shirt?

The basic requirements of a base layer when walking or hiking are to wick sweat away from the skin and to keep you dry, without that horrible clammy sensation. Some layers also feature anti-microbial treatments, designed to prevent odour and stop your clothes from smelling, which is especially useful for extended multi-day backpacking trips. Some fabrics are better at moisture management than others. We’ve provided an overview of common fabric options below.

Merino wool is soft and comfortable, regulates temperature well and is naturally anti-bacterial, so it resists odour. In many ways it is the ideal baselayer fabric, but it is more expensive and less durable than synthetic fabrics.

Synthetic baselayers are usually made from polyester, polypropylene or polyamide (nylon). These fibres wick moisture exceptionally well and are very durable. Generally synthetic layers do not regulate body temperature as well as merino, though polypropylene is still very thermally efficient. The major downside of synthetics is that they tend to smell after prolonged wear.

Once regarded as the premium baselayer fabric, silk is even finer than merino, making it incredibly soft and comfortable to wear. It is not as thermally efficient as wool but still offers good warmth for weight. However, it is expensive, delicate and relatively poor at wicking away moisture, meaning it is now rarely used.

Bamboo is a relatively new baselayer fabric. It is super soft – ideal for those with sensitive skin – quick-drying and wicks well. However, bamboo’s main benefits are that it is eco-friendly and sustainable. Like merino and silk, it is a natural fibre, not a synthetic one, but is less resource-intensive to produce compared to wool.

Hybrid fabrics

Hybrid baselayers generally use a blend of yarns to maximise the benefits of different fibres, e.g. by offering the comfort and performance of merino wool plus the durability and wicking qualities of synthetics. Other hybrid baselayers may utilise zoned construction, employing fabric panels of different types.

Baselayers are usually classed as lightweight, midweight or heavyweight, depending on the thickness of the fabric. It is sometimes expressed as a number, called gsm (grams per square metre). A higher gsm usually means a thicker fabric, though warmth is dependent on fabric properties and composition as well as weight.

A baselayer’s breathability depends on various factors, including fabric type and quality, its weight or thickness and how its fibres are woven. Lightweight baselayers are generally more breathable than heavier weights and therefore better suited to high-output activities like fastpacking or scrambling.

Crew or zip neck

A quarter or half zip offers better temperature control than a crew neck. Zip-neck layers usually also have a raised collar for added sun protection. But crew necks are usually cheaper and can feel more comfortable when worn as part of a layering system.

A baselayer should be close-fitting, sitting next to the skin for maximum moisture wicking and insulating performance. But a roomier, casual fit can be more versatile for everyday wear or for use as a stand-alone layer.

UPF protection

Though all fabrics offer some protection from the sun, many baselayers have specific UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) ratings. This indicates how effectively the fabric can filter harmful UV radiation. UPF 15-24 offers a good level of protection, UPF 25-39 is very good and UPF 40+ is excellent, blocking 97.5%+ of UV radiation.

Odour prevention

Synthetic layers were once notorious for their pong, particularly after sustained use. But many synthetic fabrics are now treated with technologies such as Polygiene, where an anti-microbial treatment is added during production to help prevent the growth of odour-causing bacteria.

Baselayers are constructed from fabric panels, which are stitched together to form the garment. Placement of seams can make a huge difference to comfort. Flatlocked seams can also reduce chafing, while additional panels of material over the shoulders may be provided to protect from pack straps.

Thumb loops

A useful but often overlooked feature, thumb loops help to stop sleeves riding up and exposing your wrists in colder conditions.
