Pick a Musical Style

My first piece of advice to couples is to sit down and think about what style of music they want to include in their wedding ceremony. There is an abundance of talent in Ireland to suit every taste.

Do you envisage walking down the aisle listening to a singer perform your favourite song, or a gospel choir performing a soulful number? Maybe you’d prefer a piece of classical music? The options are endless but deciding on this key piece is the first step in planning music you will fall in love with for your wedding day.

Check out the social scene

Almost every professional musician and singer in the country has a dedicated social media space where you can check out their work without having to leave your home.

Look for live videos and recordings they might have online as this gives you a great sense of their overall style. It’s also good to check out any reviews they might have from past couples to give you an idea of what they are like to work with. All of this info helps you make your final decision. My advice is to go with your gut – when you hear the musician/singer you want, you’ll know!

Make a list of songs you would like to include in your ceremony

I always advise couples to make a list on their phone of songs they particularly enjoy and feel reflect the atmosphere they are hoping to create for their wedding ceremony.

Wedding ceremony songs are important and often overlooked - whether traditional or modern - we've got processional and recessional wedding song When choosing the music for your wedding ceremony , you’ll need to make two important choices – your processional and recessional songs.

The Victorian String Quartet demonstrates some classical music for your wedding ceremony .

Pay particular attention to lyrics-we can often fall in love with melody and music but when you strip the song back, the lyrics tell a different story. Definitely a tip to watch out for!

Arrange a zoom call with your wedding singer and musician

I work really closely with couples to help them create a bespoke musical set for their ceremony. It’s important to me that the music reflects each couple and their own musical tastes.

This is where that song list on your phone comes in handy. It gives your musician a great sense of the kind of music you love. I always use this as a guide and offer suggestions as to where each piece of music/song would work best for each part of the service.

Give special consideration for what music you want to walk down the aisle toThis is the song/piece of music you will remember in 20 years time. It will set the tone for the entire ceremony so my advice is to choose with your heart!

Pick a song or piece of music that is meaningful to you. Some couples opt for a special song whilst others choose a classical piece of music or an instrumental version of a popular song. Remember to Google those lyrics before you make your final decision to make sure the words of the song capture the moment the way you see it.

Don’t be shy to ask if your singer/musician can learn a new song.

One of my favourite things to do as a ceremony singer and musician is to learn new songs. Some of my favourite songs to perform are ones I was asked to learn by couples so don’t feel shy in asking your singer or musician if they offer this as part of their service.

Communion Reflection Song – Do or Don’t?

If you’re having a church ceremony, you will have the option of including a spoken or musical piece after communion. You might like to include a relative or family friend by asking them to read a poem or if you’d rather not choose amongst your guests, your singer can perform a reflective song.

‘If I should fall behind’ by Bruce Springsteen is a beautiful fit for this part of the ceremony-the lyrics paint the perfect picture for your wedding day and the stillness in the church at this point really lends itself to your guests fully taking in the experience. If opting for a civil ceremony, this is a gorgeous fit performed directly after your vows.

What should I opt for as a recessional/exit piece?

My best piece of advice is to go with something upbeat. This is the beginning of the celebrations and the music should reflect that.

I have performed all types of music at this part of the ceremony but the key thing to remember is to keep it lively and fun.

Ask your wedding musician what music packages they offer

Most ceremony musicians also offer drinks reception music as well as dinner music which has become very popular in recent years.

You can often make a good saving by booking the same supplier for both so don’t forget to ask about their full range of packages on offer.
