It’s been a very tough year for the wedding industry and as any couple who had plans to walk up the aisle in 2020 will know, it’s been an extremely stressful time filled with uncertainty.

With ever-changing guidelines, local lockdowns, national lockdowns and restrictions aplenty, it’s a wonder any weddings have taken place at all. But as they say, where there’s a will, there’s a way and the beauty of this whole experience is that communities are pulling together to make miracles happen.

When Elaine and Conor’s wedding day was threatened by a last minute regional lockdown at the beginning of October, the team at The Armada Hotel, their venue, banded together to ensure they could still have the day of their dreams.

A frantic number of phone calls and speedy last minute trips cross-county borders later, the pair finally got to say ‘I do,’ their special day saved by the hotel’s wedding planner/fairy wedmother Grainne.

When Elaine and Conor got engaged at a Pearl Jam gig in Berlin back in 2018, little did they know a global pandemic would one day threaten the most important day of their lives but sure it’s a story to tell the grandkids one day, right?

‘Conor and I were originally supposed to get married on the 26 June this year with roughly 150 guests in attendance,’ the bride tells EVOKE. ‘Unfortunately, we had to postpone our plans because of Covid and rearranged everything for the 8 October. It was really tough but we had no other option and thankfully our suppliers were available for our new date.’

The months that followed were stressful ones for the pair, the threat of further restrictions hanging over their head. What should have been an exciting lead up to the big day was filled with worry and uncertainty and sure enough their plans would be tested once again.

‘Our wedding day was always under the threat of further restrictions which made it very hard to plan for,’ Elaine explains. ‘It should have been an exciting happy time for us but like for all other couples due to be married in 2020, it was extremely stressful right until the last minute.’

Just a week before the wedding, Conor and Elaine’s anxiety levels rose to an all time high when county Galway was threatened with Level 3 restrictions; then, some days later and with just four days to go, Level 5 restrictions looked likely.

‘We thought the whole wedding would be cancelled,’ Elaine says.

Queensland' s borders to reopen. The Queensland Government says it will ease some coronavirus contact restrictions faster than expected, with the number of people allowed in small venues to double and casinos, massage parlours and nightclubs set to open.

While level five was not to be, the government did introduced Level 3 restrictions which, unfortunately, would come into effect the day before their big day.

‘We didn’t sleep a wink that night and our anxiety was through the roof,’ Elaine recalls. ‘Going to Level 3 meant our guests couldn’t travel to another county for our wedding.’

Fortunately, the team at the Armada were on the ball with hotel owner John Burke working alongside Grainne to cook up a plan for the pair overnight – get everyone to the venue before county restrictions came into play at midnight!

‘With no sleep and lots of tears and phone calls later, we were on the road to The Armada within a few hours,’ the bride says. ‘Most of our immediate family dropped everything and made a last minute dash to get there before midnight.’

‘As soon as we arrived, all our worries and stress melted away. John and Grainne pulled out all the stops; they even gave us and all our guests that first night’s stay complimentary which we thought was a really kind gesture! We can never thank them enough.’

Having been forced to reduce their wedding from 150 guests to 90 guests, 45 guests and finally 25, Elaine and Conor counted their blessings for being able to have any wedding at all!

‘The day was amazing from start to finish,’ the bride says. ‘There were some really important people who couldn’t be there but the people that were there really made the day extra special for us and we are forever grateful to them all.’

‘The sun was shining all day and there was such a beautiful relaxed vibe. We couldn’t be happier to now be Mr & Mrs Foley and we feel very lucky to have had such a fantastic day with family and friends.’

The couple say they will be forever grateful to The Armanda for going above and beyond to ensure they could still walk up the aisle and extend that gratitude to all their suppliers who showed only kindness and understanding ‘throughout a really difficult year.’
