The Duchess attached a blue ribbon to her wedding dress for good luck in a touching gesture to Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in a car crash in 1997. The late royal had also sewn a blue ribbon to the gown she wore to her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles.

Prince William also honoured his mother's memory on the big day by inviting representatives from the charities she supported during her life to the event.

For the historic occasion, the Duchess wore a Victorian-inspired corseted Alexander McQueen design.

The impressive dress also boasted floral patterns cut out from lace and stitched onto silk tulle of the bodice.
