The next couple of years promise to be an exciting time in the car industry. Manufacturers are continuing to embrace electrification, and many of the new cars coming soon will be either hybrids or pure electric cars. That doesn’t mean that we should be mourning the death of the performance car just yet, though - far from it; in the next two years, a 300bhp MINI JCW hatchback will have been revealed, plus a new BMW M3 and at least one mid-engined Aston Martin hypercar.

Judging by these spy shots, the Audi A1 will gain a SUV-style variant, just like the Ford Fiesta Active. The A1 Allroad might be too small to offer quattro four-wheel-drive, but it’s expected to feature a driving mode dedicated to handling slippery surfaces. The likely engine is the A1’s range-topping 1.5-litre petrol engine.

Fiat 500 EV

There’ll be a new Fiat 500 in 2020, and Fiat has confirmed that the upcoming model will be much more luxurious and only available as an electric car. The 500 will keep its compact size but will offer much more interior space and technology. It’ll cost more than the current car, but Fiat have released many popular special edition 500 models, which tend to be much more expensive than base versions.

Hyundai i10

While the Fiat 500 and Volkswagen up! are going to be sold only with electric power, it’s thought that a new Hyundai i10 will still be available with a petrol engine. The i10 will be available with a large eight-inch touchscreen from the larger i30, as Hyundai looks to increase the equipment level on its smallest car.

SEAT el-Born

SEAT has revealed its first electric car. Based on the Volkswagen I.D., the SEAT el-Born will have a sporty feel and will offer around 260 miles of range. It’s a similar size to the SEAT Leon hatchback, but will be more spacious due to the lack of engine and exhaust. The powertrain creates 202bhp, giving a 0-62mph time of 7.5 seconds.

Small SUVs coming in 2020

Peugeot 2008

After the new Peugeot 208, the new 2008 small SUV will be revealed. It’ll borrow the aggressive new styling from the 208 hatchback, and there’ll be both hybrid and electric versions further down the line. The electric model should have around 280 miles of range, similar to a Hyundai Kona Electric.

Mazda CX-30

Mazda is introducing a third SUV to its lineup. Larger than the CX-3 and smaller than the CX-5, the CX-30 is a family-sized SUV to rival the Ford Kuga and Skoda Karoq. The engine range will mostly be petrol, but Mazda promises that it’ll have the efficiency of a diesel thanks to some clever technology. It features the same eye-catching Kodo design language as Mazda’s other models.

The Mitsubishi ASX is getting a facelift, with the company’s new ‘Dynamic Shield’ front end. Mitsubishi has fitted a brand-new touchscreen infotainment system, which is now eight inches in size. Under the bonnet, there’s a new non-turbo 2.0-litre petrol engine available, mated to either a five-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox.

Skoda Kamiq

Skoda has unveiled their third SUV, the Kamiq. Smaller than the Karoq and Kodiaq, the Kamiq will compete with the SEAT Arona and Nissan Juke in the small SUV class, but will offer as much space as lots of bigger SUVs. There’s a floating touchscreen inside, and sharp styling outside. All of these things should make the Kamiq a big seller.

BMW is set to broaden the 2 Series range with a four-door Gran Coupe version. The popularity of two-door sports cars is declining as more people want sportiness with extra practicality. There will be an M240i version, using the X2’s 302bhp 2.0-litre engine, and a hybrid model - made possible with the 2 Series’ switch to front-wheel-drive for the first time.

Petrol-powered performance cars are here to stay for a while at least. The next BMW M3 saloon will offer up to 474bhp, although a ‘Pure’ version for enthusiasts will offer slightly less power, a six-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel-drive. Otherwise, it’s all-wheel-drive and comes with BMW’s slick automatic. In this model, 0-62mph will be taken care of in under four seconds.

Not wanting to let the VW Group have all the fast SUVs, Hyundai is set to launch a hot version of its Tucson SUV. It’ll have four-wheel-drive and could kick out around 340bhp, but should be slightly cheaper than the Cupra Ateca and Volkswagen T-Roc R. Lowered suspension and sportier styling will mark the Tucson N out from the rest of the range.

MINI John Cooper Works GP

The MINI hatchback will get a super-hot range-topper next year. The GP offers 300bhp - 70bhp more than the ‘standard’ John Cooper Works car - and will hit 62mph in under six seconds. It’ll be limited to just 3,000 cars, but all will almost certainly be snapped up immediately by MINI enthusiasts.

Peugeot will produce a sporty hybrid version of the 508 saloon. First previewed at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, it’s not known whether the production version will use the same 408bhp powertrain as the concept. In concept form, Peugeot said the car could hit 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds and accelerate to a top speed of 155mph.

Porsche is gearing up to put its Tesla Model S-rivalling electric saloon on sale in the next year. The Taycan will offer suitably Porsche-like performance - 0-62mph will take around 3.5 seconds, and it’ll reach a top speed of 155mph thanks to a powertrain producing almost 600bhp. It also offers a range of over 300 miles, and will be able to offer 180 miles of driving from just nine minutes of charge.

Rolls-Royce Ghost

After the new Rolls-Royce Phantom was unveiled in 2017, the smaller Ghost is following suit with a new model for 2020. While the styling doesn’t look too different to the current car, it’ll sit on Rolls’ ‘Architecture of Luxury’ platform, instead of sharing its underpinnings with the BMW 7 Series.

Mercedes EQV

The Mercedes EQV will be the world’s first electric MPV. Essentially an electric version of the Mercedes V-Class, the new model manages 240 miles on a charge and can top up by 60 miles in just 15 minutes. A production version will be shown at Frankfurt Motor Show later this year.

BMW has provided official images of the iNEXT in development in the Arctic Circle, even though the SUV isn’t set to be revealed for another two years. It’s thought that the iNEXT will offer between 250 and 400 miles of range, depending on the size of the battery chosen, because it’ll be BMW’s flagship SUV and will act as a showcase for future technology.

Nissan IMQ

The Nissan Qashqai is set to be replaced in 2021, and the IMQ concept could preview what it might look. Revealed at Geneva, the IMQ is full of concept-car styling touches, but the overall look is expected to be carried over to the family SUV. Nissan’s new e-POWER hybrid drivetrain will be offered from launch.

Details are scarce at the moment, but we do know that it’ll feature ultra-rapid charging capability to reduce the time needed to refill the batteries. The Macan EV will open the floodgates for a range of electrified Porsche models - the company says half its sales will be hybrid or electric by 2022.
