Car industry warns of return to 'dark days' as manufacturing falls again

Car industry warns of return to 'dark days' as manufacturing falls again UK car manufacturing fell for the tenth month in the row in March as the industry warned that output from the sector could fall to 1980s levels in the event of a no-deal Brexit. The number of cars produced declined to 126,195, 14.4% lower than in the same period last year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). It reported an 18.1% fall in vehicles produced for domestic use and a 13.4% downturn for overseas - the latter blamed on continued weaker demand in key Asian and European markets.

UK car production fell 15.5 per cent in May, confirming 12 consecutive months of declining outputs.

Factories built 116,035 new models last month, which was 21,239 fewer than in May 2018.

Industry bosses said a full year of tumbling production was a 'serious concern' and warned that the sector faces 'seismic challenges' ahead.

The SMMT said production figures had been skewed somewhat by manufacturers bringing forward their factory shutdowns to the end of March and early April in anticipation of disruptions caused by the UK's proposed departure from the EU.

However, chief executive Mike Hawes said there were serious concerns for the welfare of the sector as Brexit looms.

The industry figures showed that production outputs for the domestic market had fallen by 25.9 per cent year-on-year last month, while manufacturing for export – which accounts for more than eight in 10 vehicles built in the UK – also slumped by 12.6 per cent.

The surprising facts behind the UK's declining steel industry

The surprising facts behind the UK's declining steel industry Here are two surprising facts which between them help explain why the UK steel industry seems to be in what looks like a perma-slump. The first is that in the past two years (to be precise, the past 22 months) China has manufactured more steel than Britain has since the height of the Industrial Revolution in 1870. Try, if you can, to get your head round that. In the months since the last general election China has produced more steel than Britain - the country where modern steel manufacturing was invented - has produced. Ever.

He said: '12 consecutive months of decline for UK car manufacturing is a serious concern and underlines yet again the importance of securing a Brexit deal quickly.'

'The sector is facing multiple seismic challenges simultaneously: technological, environmental and economic.

'The ongoing political instability and uncertainty over our future overseas trade relationships, most notably with Europe, is not helping and, whilst the industry's fundamentals remain strong, a brighter future is only possible if we secure a deal that can help us regain our reputation as an attractive location for automotive investment.

Worst UK manufacturing slump since Brexit vote as firms stop stockpiling

Worst UK manufacturing slump since Brexit vote as firms stop stockpiling Manufacturing in the UK has suffered its worst slump since the 2016 referendum as firms were hit by disruption from a Brexit date that never came in March. Figures from the latest industry survey released on Monday showed new orders drying up and Brexit stockpiling coming to an abrupt end. Export orders plummeted at the steepest rate in almost five years in April as British manufacturing suffered its steepest downturn since July 2016. The slump marked a sharp contrast to the previous month’s figures, which had been boosted by stockpiling for a potential Brexit disruption in the biggest rise in factory output in 20 years.

Stuart Apperley, director and head of UK automotive at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking said motor industry is particularly susceptible to issues facing the wider economy and has a number of headwinds of its own.

'Speculation around plant closures and production scale-backs are doing little to instill confidence among manufacturers.

'Many issues the sector faces – from uncertainty around future trading relationships through to negative publicity concerning diesel emissions – are affecting consumer confidence and subsequently hurting sales and, ultimately, manufacturers.

'Promisingly, the sector has proven itself resilient in the past, but more certainty is needed in the coming months.'
