Cars Like Amazon for used cars: Online dealer Cazoo launches with second-hand motors it can deliver to your door - but there's no haggling on price
Amazon dips its toes in the smart glasses industry
Following in the footsteps of Google, Snap Inc., and North, Amazon announced on Wednesday the launch of an Alexa-equipped set of smart glasses: The Echo Frames. Among the slew of Echo product reveals and updates announced at Amazon's hardware event in Seattle Wednesday, the company introduced the world to its first set of intelligent glasses launching with a surprisingly wallet-friendly price tag of $180.The Echo Frames were designed for all-day use; they're lightweight and can be fitted with prescription lenses like North's Focals.
Buying goods online from specialist retailers like Amazon is quick, easy and relatively hassle free; you find what you want, pay a set price and have a product delivered to your home.
Now there's a used car website,, that reckons it can offer a similar service by having more than 1,500 second-hand vehicles in stock to choose from that are brought straight to your door.
It's been launched this week by Alex Chesterman - the brains behind property site Zoopla and online DVD rental pioneer LoveFilm - and claims to be 'Amazon-ing’ the used car market.
And that means the end of trekking round vehicle lots and haggling with a used-car salesman.
From illegal tyres to missing engines, car dealers reveal the trade-in tricks pulled by dodgy customers
Study finds it's not just dealers who resort to underhand tactics to save some moneyHowever, dodgy dealings cut both ways and new research among dealers has found some of the ways that tight-fisted customers have tried to rip them off at trade in time.
Cazoo, which This is Money and MailOnline's parent group DMGT has invested in via its DMG Ventures arm, has instantly become the UK's largest online-only second-hand car retailer.
It has done that by building up the biggest stock of for-sale vehicles in the UK before launch.
Rather than acting as a middleman, connecting buyers and sellers like Autotrader, for example, the idea for Cazoo was to buy in a stock of used cars, put them through rigorous quality checks similar to car maker dealers 'used approved' schemes - and then make buying them and taking delivery as smooth as possible.
Bentley Motors loses trademark battle against family-run Manchester firm
A judge has concluded the car maker had infringed the trademark rights of Manchester-based Bentley Clothing. In a ruling at the High Court in London on Friday, a judge concluded the car maker had infringed the trademark rights of Manchester-based Bentley Clothing by using the Bentley name on its own range of goods.
At any given time it will have around 1,500 motors to choose from, ranging from family SUVs to sporty hatchbacks as well as electric vehicles. At the time of publishing, the site has 1,687 cars for sale from 34 different brands.
Every car comes with a seven-day money-back guarantee and if customers aren't happy with the vehicle they've chosen they can have it collected for free by Cazoo, no questions asked.
And for further peace of mind, each motor is provided with seven days free insurance and a free comprehensive 90-day warranty and RAC roadside assistance.
The site promises to have a range of motors, but will focus mainly on the most sought-after machines.
For instance, there are 49 Ford Fiestas - the UK's most popular new and used model - for sale.
Cazoo owns all the cars it advertises rather than listing them on behalf of other businesses.
Amazon’s own Echo Buds may have revealed a future fitness tracking feature
CNBC spotted the mystery option, and so did weBut don’t rule out fitness tracking just yet, because CNBC and The Verge both spotted a new “Fitness” tab in the Echo Buds section of the Alexa app today.
This stock of vehicles has been acquired by a team of experienced car buyers from auctions, dealerships, leasing companies and manufacturers.
Each car that's selected by the buying team is 'thoroughly reconditioned' at the firm's 55-acre facility in the Midlands before being listed for sale.
This includes a 150-point inspection and a fresh MOT certificate. Only models with a full service history will be available.
Every model advertised has a raft of high-definition, 360-degree images, so customers can closely inspect every panel, seat and piece of plastic on the car they're interested in.
The listing also includes the vehicle's specification, full quota of features and history.
With no forecourts or sales staff to finance, the site claims to pass these collective cost savings on to its customers.
While this means buyers don't have the opportunity to haggle, vehicles should - in theory - be listed for lower prices than similar models advertised by trade seller.
Influx of second-hand petrol cars hammers used values
A spike in nearly-new petrol models causes prices to fall by up to 14% in some cases, while equivalent diesels hold fastThe company, which tracks the used car market, reported that the average value of a sub-12-month, sub-12,000-mile petrol car fell from 76% to 68% of original cost new between October 2018 and 2019. Prices dropped gradually throughout the year, but plummeted to a low of 62% in September.
And because prices are fixed, customers can also quickly create a finance plan online they're comfortable with.
Orders are delivered anywhere in the UK in as little as 72 hours by a fleet of Cazoo-branded trucks. They can also collect vehicles used in part-exchange, which is agreed beforehand during the online purchase process.
Alex Chesterman, founder and ceo of the brand, said the concept is aimed at the millions of motorists who buy second-hand cars each year using existing services that he described as 'outdated and not fit for purpose for today’s consumer'.
'Cazoo is reimagining used car buying to make it simple and convenient whilst adding transparency and quality to an industry which suffers from a lack of consumer trust,' he added.
'We take away the need to travel, to haggle, to spend countless hours at a dealership and to risk any buyer’s remorse.
'With Cazoo, you can purchase or finance a used car entirely online, have it delivered to your door in as little as 72 hours and have seven days to make sure it fits your lifestyle.
'And if you don’t love your Cazoo car, we’ll come and collect it for free.'
