The saloon model, which we’ve not yet seen, will have a rear end that looks more similar to that of the Mercedes A-Class Saloon. The rear lights will be almost triangular in shape and the boot lid will have more defined creases than the current car.

Along with a new AMG steering wheel, the updated E63 will benefit from Mercedes’ latest MBUX infotainment technology. We expect the range-topping E63 to have augmented reality sat nav, plus plenty of driver assistance technology, including Active Speed Limit Assist. When you have the cruise control on, it can take information from the sat nav and from online to automatically slow you down before junctions, traffic and hazards.

Like Mercedes’ other AMG cars, the 4MATIC four-wheel-drive system will be fitted. It’ll help control all the power available; standard cars get 563bhp while E63 S models get a whopping 604bhp, and the updated model may get more than this. Zero-to-62mph currently takes 3.5 seconds, and you can pay to have the top speed lifted from 155mph to 186mph.

For the first time, the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine may get mild-hybrid assistance to reduce the car’s emissions. Audi’s latest RS models have this, allowing the engine to shut off when coasting and slowing to a stop. Besides slightly improving fuel efficiency, the ‘EQ Boost’ system should help make full-throttle launches even faster. A new particulate filter will also be fitted to reduce harmful emissions but it could mean the E63 loses some of its sonic character.
