According to media reports, the former Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali will become the new managing director of Formula 1. The Italian will succeed Chase Carey at the head of the racing series in the coming year, reported the specialist portal “Racefans”.

According to the BBC, the team bosses have already been informed about the personnel. The American Carey will take on representative tasks in the role of Formula 1 President.

Domenicali was team principal at Ferrari from the end of 2007 to 2014. He led Scuderia to their last world championship title to date, winning the constructors' championship in 2008. After his forced resignation, he took over the chairmanship of the commission for single-seater racing cars at the Fia World Federation. The 55-year-old has been the managing director of Lamborghini since 2016.

Ferrari F355 Spider review: Retro Road Test

Ferrari F355 Spider review: Retro Road Test The F355 is a relatively affordable – yet fabulously exciting – way to live the Ferrari dream. We drive the evocative F1 Spider. And while it does, admittedly, offer little more than half the power (380hp vs. 720hp), it certainly isn’t half the car. Not by, um, half.

There has been speculation about a change at the top of Formula 1 for some time now, after the long-term future of the racing series had recently been regulated with the conclusion of a new basic contract with all manufacturers. Carey took up the position of managing director in early 2017 after the US company Liberty Media took over the racing series. For him, the long-time Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone had to vacate the post.

Should Domenicali now move up into the role, this could further strengthen Ferrari's influence on the motorsport premier class. Fia President Jean Todt was also the Ferrari team boss for a long time. The current Formula 1 sports director Ross Brawn was technology director at Scuderia in Todt's tenure and was considered an important factor in all of Michael Schumacher's title wins.
