Waterloo Road: What are these iconic stars up to now?

Waterloo Road: What are these iconic stars up to now? We still fancy Bolton Smilie, not gonna lieHowever, Waterloo Road was one of our favourite TV shows. If you didn't catch it at the time, it was a school drama which was basically 100% accurate with its realistic depiction of our early noughties school experience.

Like many people around the country, we have had little occasion to travel this year. With car shows and events like the Power Tour and Drag Week postponed and rescheduled due to the coronavirus, we've mostly been stuck at home. I recently had occasion to travel to Santa Rosa, California, for a photo shoot with Scott Birdsall, owner/builder of Old Smokey, the Cummins-powered Ford F1 that beat the diesel-engine record at the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb. MotorTrend's William Walker was the shooter, with me serving as assistant and camera car driver. It seemed like as good excuse as any to make a trip out of it.

Santa Rosa is about an hour north of San Francisco and 436 miles from our offices in Los Angeles, by the most direct route. I took the more scenic route there, driving north on Highway 101. The rolling hills closer to the coast are a more interesting landscape for a road trip than the relatively flat central valley traversed by Interstate 5. Highway 101 also cuts through the center of San Francisco and takes you across the Golden Gate Bridge, which is always worth a photo op with my phone.

Our shoot went swimmingly, and the pictures are going to look great in an upcoming issue of HOT ROD. With that accomplished, I found myself heading for the coast and traveling home on the Pacific Coast Highway, California's Route 1. I picked up PCH in Santa Cruz, just north of the Monterey Peninsula, and after an unexpected (and inexplicable) traffic jam, the city faded to stunning vistas of the Central Coast.

The sun was setting as I drove through Big Sur; it was something I hadn't planned, but that happy coincidence made for some amazing pictures. I spent the night in San Simeon so I could check out the elephant seal colony in the morning.

After spending some time watching the seals flop around and grunt at each other, I headed south to Morro Bay for coffee and a stroll through the harbor area of the scenic coastal town that is dominated by a 581-foot-tall volcanic plug that is visible for many miles up and down the coast.
