As part of the UK’s membership of the EU, cars could display the Euro symbol and Great Britain (GB) national identifier on the front and rear number plates. It meant that a separate GB sticker wasn’t required when travelling within the European Union.

Although number plates fitted to a vehicle before 1 January 2021 will be unaffected, a GB sticker will be required for all UK motorists travelling within the EU – even those with cars showing the Euro symbol and GB national identifier.

Brexit is the United Kingdom's decision to leave the EU . One reason is that the number of EU -born workers fell by 95% in 2017. This has hit the low-skilled and medium-skilled occupations the most. On the other hand, new polls show that the majority of EU citizens still strongly support the Union .

Brexit brings about the end of a tumultuous three-and-a-half year departure process that has caused turmoil in the U.K.'s political establishment, economic uncertainty and heightened tensions between the U.K. and the EU — its largest single trading partner as a bloc.

This has always been the case when displaying the following flags on the left-hand side of the number plate: Union Flag, Cross of St George, Cross of St Andrew or Red Dragon of Wales.

The letters or national identifiers available to use are:

  • GREAT BRITAIN, Great Britain or GB
  • UNITED KINGDOM, United Kingdom or UK
  • CYMRU, Cymru, CYM or Cym
  • ENGLAND, England, ENG or Eng
  • SCOTLAND, Scotland, SCO or Sco
  • WALES or Wales

The government has contacted number plate suppliers to tell them they cannot produce a number plate with an EU symbol from 1 January 2021.

In a separate move, green number plates can now be fitted to vehicles with zero tailpipe emissions. The non-mandatory plates are available to new and existing vehicles and use a green flash on the left-hand side of the number plate. This applies to all vehicle types: cars, vans, taxis, motorbikes, buses, coaches and HGVs.

UK and EU negotiating teams talked through the night to finalise a post- Brexit trade deal. The two sides have one week to get any deal formally approved in London and Brussels. The UK left the EU at the end of January, but remains under its trading rules until 31 December.

Transport secretary Grant Shapps said: “A green recovery is key to helping us achieve our net zero carbon commitments while also promoting economic growth.

“Green number plates could unlock a number of incentives for drivers and increase awareness of cleaner vehicles on our roads, showing people that a greener transport future is within our grasp.”

The government has also made changes to the eligibility for black and silver number plates. From 1 January 2021, only vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1980 are eligible to display black and silver plates. The cars must be licensed in the historic tax class.

Land Rover Owner International has called this ‘a blow to owners of military vehicles which were approaching 40 years of age’. It references Land Rover models that would have displayed black and silver plates showing their military equipment registration mark (ERM) during service.
