JOHN NAISH: Will new type of petrol wreck your car?

JOHN NAISH: Will new type of petrol wreck your car? All petrol stations will sell E10 as standard unleaded petrol from September in a bid to cut emissions but experts have warned the new fuel could be worse for the environment and could damage your car.Containing 10 per cent ethanol, from this month it will increasingly replace the existing standard, E5 (only 5 per cent ethanol), in unleaded pumps at filling stations.

Transport secretary Grant Shapps has revealed the winning design for what the government hopes will become an ‘iconic’ UK electric vehicle chargepoint.

Designed with the Royal College of Art and PA Consulting, it is hoped the new chargepoint will become ‘as iconic as the Great British post box, London bus or black cab’.

It is being shown in the UK Pavilion at the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow.

“To support the transition to EVs, its integral that we have the infrastructure to support them,” said Mr Shapps.

Citroen WILL sell its tiny Ami electric car in the UK from £5k Bosses gave the green light to the two-seater Citroen Ami coming here after receiving more than 12,000 expressions of interest from potential British customers. The French carmaker says the dinky car exemplifies the 'spirit' of the legendary cheap and cheerful 2CV.So proud is the French car firm about exporting its new car to post-Brexit Britain that they have adorned one of the 47-mile-range models in a bright Union Flag - though it won't be sold with this paint-scheme option.

“My vision is for the UK to have one of the best EV infrastructure networks in the world, with excellent British design at its heart.”

‘Generate excitement’

The new chargepoint concept is said to have been designed in collaboration with consumers, local government, accessibility groups and industry.

The design concept ‘will provide greater choice to industry and local government, as well as raise awareness and generate excitement around electric vehicles’.

PA Consulting transport expert Warwick Goodall insisted the new chargepoint “has the potential to become a British icon”.

The organisation will now work with both the public and the automotive industry “on elaborating this design framework that will accelerate the chargepoint rollout”.

‘Sense of joy’

Described as simple and modern in appearance, the design “combines practicality and inclusivity with inspiring aesthetics”. It “incorporates a sense of joy” that will encourage motorists to use it.

The chargepoint has been given the green light by a steering board including representatives from engineering company Arup, the UK’s Design Council, Historic England and University College London.

The blueprint design concept, says PA Consulting, can be used “in any context to create recognisable, user-friendly chargepoints.

“This will enable drivers to easily find and use any chargepoint regardless of its location, removing the need to grapple with different interfaces when they need to charge their car.”

It is hoped the new chargepoint concept will become a standard, off-the-shelf design that local authorities and other infrastructure providers can utilise.
