Cars Szafnauer: Renault engine to build only for ourselves has advantages and disadvantages
Prost to depart Alpine F1 advisory role; Szafnauer, BWT set to join
Four-time Formula 1 champion Alain Prost has left his advisory role with the Alpine team as part of the ongoing management shake-up.Last week Alpine announced that executive director Marcin Budkowski, who served as de facto team principal in 2021 despite the role not officially existing, has left the team. Rossi is currently running the team himself on a temporary basis.
the Alpine formula 1 team has been the only designer in the World Championship since last year, which is fired from a Renault powertrain after McLaren had secured the services of Mercedes.
Already in the years before, the long-term customers Red Bull and Toro Rosso (now Alpha Tauri) have separated from the Renault aggregates and have entered into a partnership with Honda.
Alpine team boss Otmar Szafnauer was asked if this is a problem because less data can be collected for the Renault engine: "I think it would be a little better if two teams would drive our engine because you learn faster something wrong. " On the other hand, SzaFnauer emphasizes that it also has its advantages to make the engine only for themselves: "Since we only install the engine with us, we do not need to go to the wishes of others."

"Although the other engine suppliers say that they focus on the construction team in the construction team, but customers have their wishes and fight hard for it," adds Szafnauer. Especially in the design of cooling and integrating the engine in the chassis, customer teams want to have a say according to the Alpine team boss.
"Sometimes the other engine manufacturers have to compromise, where we do not have to. So there are advantages and disadvantages," says Szafnauer. For the 2022 season, Renault has built a power plant with Split Turbo for the first time to catch up by the deficit in terms of engine performance from recent years.
