Modern Family is about to enter its tenth season, but it won't be all goofiness and laughter this time around, as the creators of the hit ABC show have revealed that there will be a "significant" death.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, co-creator Christopher Lloyd said the upcoming season will handle some "bigger life events".

"We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it's not easy to do because that's a heavy subject," he said. "But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it."

Modern Family has not yet been renewed for an eleventh season, but Lloyd is hopeful that we'll be seeing more of the Dunphy family in the future.

"There's goodwill on both sides to make it happen, but there's also complicated matters that have to get worked through, and there's a time constraint on it, because we can't have it take too long," he explained.

Modern Family season 10 premieres on September 26 at 9pm on ABC.
