Beverley Jane McEwan (née Moxon; previously Atkinson, Sowden and Callard ; born 28 March 1957) is an English actress, known for her role as Liz McDonald in ITV's Coronation Street and Flo Henshaw in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.

Coronation Street star Beverley Callard has said she is finally managing to regain her confidence after a nervous breakdown 10 years ago.

The soap actress has played Liz McDonald since 1989, but had to take a break from her popular role in 2009 when she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital with a nervous breakdown.

Now, she has spoken to OK! magazine about losing her confidence during her illness, and how she has started to feel more like herself again.

She said: “I was very confident when I first started out, but I lost that when I went through my breakdown.

“I’ve always said that depression is the curse of the strong. I tried to hide it for so long and it ended up in a breakdown.”

Callard revealed that often, the problems she was facing would stop her from leaving the house.

She said: “During that time I would agree to go to an event, then on the day I’d get myself into such a state that I couldn’t go.

However, Callard has worked hard to rebuild her confidence since 2009 and says that now, she is in a better place than ever.

The 62-year-old said: “I was dubious about turning 60 but it has brought with it a feeling of contentedness.

“I’m the most confident I’ve been in years. For the first time in a long time, I don’t care what people think. I’m living my life for me and I’m having a great time.”

Callard also teased that she had some “fantastic” storylines coming up for her character in the ITV soap, putting paid to any rumours that she might be about to leave her role.
