The Durrells final episode

ITV, 8pm

★★★★

The time has come to bid a final farewell to The Durrells in this final episode. Speaking as a fully paid-up member of the fan club, I definitely felt this was the right time to bow out.

The Louisa-Spiro saga has strayed a bit too far into soap territory (by way of Mills & Boon). Though the climactic scenes did pack a punch, as the looming threat of war forced the family to leave Corfu. Keeley Hawes and Alexis Georgoulis rose to the occasion in their bittersweet last meeting, as they realised a future together was impossible, conveying suppressed passion and painful restraint without straying too far into melodramatic cliche.

Boon Gould: Level 42 founding member dies aged 64 Rowland "Boon" Gould, a founding member of the band Level 42, has died aged 64. The guitarist was found dead at his home in Dorset earlier this week. In a message on Twitter, his brother Phil, who also started the band, said: "My heart is broken." Level 42 bassist and vocalist Mark King said: "It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to tell you of the passing of our dear friend and brother Boon Gould. Next week on The Durrells season 4 episode 6, we are going to see the end of the road — this is the series finale . There is a larger issue in this finale , though, beyond everything that is going on with Louisa and Spiros — whether or not the Durrells should move back to England in the first place.

Photo: ITV/Sid Gentle Films Elsewhere Larry (Josh O’Connor) returned, all abrasive pretentiousness, for a full episode. He's been much missed, sparking nicely off Calum Woodhouse's stolid but good-hearted Leslie as they planned a “farewell” am-dram production for the locals. It was a far cry from anything depicted in Gerald Durrell’s original trilogy of memoirs.

Mixed emotions

Photo: ITV/Sid Gentle Films But as always, writer Simon Nye caught their spirit perfectly. As he did with the other principal characters - Margo (Daisy Waterstone) declaring it was time for her to lose her virginity to Nikos, "the man from the train" and Milo Parker as the endearing (but ever-so-slightly feral) Gerry displaying mixed emotions as he realised he would have to set all his animals free.

The Durrells season 3 finale on ITV Sunday night was very much about romance -- albeit in a wide array of different forms. This episode was fun and romantic at times, but it was a rather sad ending to the entire saga of The Durrells season 3. Louisa called this a “bad day for love ” in the family and

The series has always been strongest when sticking to the core family. There have been a few too many superfluous subsidiary characters in the final outing. Miles Jupp as hapless cousin Basil outstayed his welcome in every sense and, after a promising start,  increasingly became a stereotypical bumbling Brit whose romance with Spiro's wife never rang true.

Harsh realities

Photo: ITV/Sid Gentle Films But a shocking, and poignant, coda to this gripping finale of The Durrells was a reminder that even in its most sun-kissed moments the series (like the books) hasn't shied away from the realities of its setting - Europe in the grip of violence and dictatorship, heading inevitably into war. A sub-plot involving the local policeman's attempts to confiscate their radio and Larry's typewriter as instruments of "propaganda" reinforced the sense that their idyll was coming to an end - though he was eventually distracted by being cast as one of the Ancient Greek heroes in the play.

The Durrells, season 4 finale, ITV, review: Last episode strays into Mills and Boon territory with Louisa-Spiro love story © Provided by Johnston Publishing Ltd There was an elegiac feel to the final episode of a series which has, though sometimes over-stretched, been great fun. Photo: ITV/Sid Gentle Films This was as ramshackle and disaster-strewn as you might have expected, but it prompted a Mr Darcy moment when Merch Husey's passionate Turk Zoltan, driven to distraction by Margo's  liaison, sailed to her side but had to wade the last few yards. And there was another returning cameo from Sven (Ulrich von der Esch), as a well-endowed satyr. All that, plus a ghostly visitation or two from some other series regulars, added to the sense of everything drawing to an end.

It’s all been great fun, if occasionally a little over-stretched. But it ended on a high note. And should Nye ever want to return to mixing eccentric Brits, colourful locals, gorgeous scenery and cute animals, Gerald’s post-war conservation expeditions inspired dozens of other books he could choose from…
