"[But] it's also really time – we are trying to serve the story to the best of our ability and the storyline of Ross and Demelza would have a time jump we'd really battle with, and it is right to end the series now while it is so strong and while these characters are loved and not diminished in any way."

Calling the series' end "very bittersweet", the actress admitted that she was still looking forward to her "next adventure". "I will always look on [Poldark] with total love and very fond memories," she added.

"The last day was just myself and Eleanor in the Nampara house in the bedroom, so we just had scenes together in bed which was quite odd," he said. "They weren't romantic scenes, just talking in the bedroom! It just made sense that it was us together.

"That was quite sad that day, and because it was contained you could harness the emotion, and it was quite sweet."

Ross and Demelza's "real connection" (for which Aidan is "indebted" to Eleanor for helping to create) is one of the reasons cast, crew, and fans alike will be sad to see Poldark bow out.

Just as well, really. We're already worried about our limited Kleenex supply.
