The success of Jack Whitehall's comedy career has also made his father Michael, a TV producer and agent, something of a household name.

They fronted the BBC chat show Backchat together before joining forces for the Netflix travelogue Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father, and are now appearing as a duo on Who Do You Think You Are?

What is perhaps less well known is that Whitehall's mother, the TV actress Hilary Gish, has also appeared on screen with her stand-up son – here's what you need to know about her.

In 1997 she starred in the 10th series of the ITV firefighter drama London's Burning as Claire, and also had a small role in the John Cleese comedy film Fierce Creatures.

Whitehall, 58, had earlier played recurring roles in the ITV series Executive Stress and The Good Guys, in which she appeared alongside Nigel Havers, one of her son Jack's two godfathers (the other being the late Richard Griffiths).

She spent the best part of a decade away from the screen, with the Daily Mail reporting that she retrained as a doula – a birth companion for pregnant women.

However, following the success of her son in recent years the 58-year-old has made a series of low-key appearances credited as Hilary Whitehall.

Last year, she replaced her husband in an agony aunt skit on Jack's YouTube channel, after Michael "derailed" the process with "a lot of hate, scorn and bad energy."

The actress joined her son in answering such queries as how to measure pasta, and the order than conserves should be applied to a crumpet.

This year, Whitehall has acted in the short film The Leaving Party, which secured £20,000 of funding after winning the inaugural Bumble's Female Film Force competition.

She has two other children with Michael – another son called Barnaby and a daughter, Molly – and they live in Putney, London.
