The use of a Gary Glitter song in Joker is attracting major criticism from cinema-goers.

The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as a particularly dark version of the DC villain, and has already found success, winning the Venice Film Festival Golden Lion and breaking records over the weekend by taking $93.5 million at the US box office.

However, Joker has also caused its fair share of controversy, with director Todd Phillips attacked for his "woke culture" comments and mass shooting survivors flagging their concerns about the film's gun violence to Warner Bros.

And, viewers have now been left deeply unimpressed with the use of Glitter's 1972 'Rock and Roll Part 2' in one scene.

Glitter was jailed in 2015 for a number of sexual assault offences, including one count of raping a 13-year-old girl.

It's no surprise then that a scene in which Glitter's song plays over the Joker (Phoenix) dancing down some stairs while his character transforms into a sinister killer has not gone down well.

"There is no f**king way they put Gary Glitter's music in the new Joker movie," said one viewer, while another added that they were "so beyond disgusted" with the choice.

Joker is in cinemas now.

Yes, Joker Is a Very Serious Drama. No, That’s Not a Compliment.

Yes, Joker Is a Very Serious Drama. No, That’s Not a Compliment. Yes, Joker Is a Very Serious Drama. No, That’s Not a Compliment.Joker, fresh off a victory at this year’s Venice Film Festival, is arriving in cinemas on a sea of hype and controversy. Its depiction of a troubled antihero driven to mass murder is generating so much concern that its own studio had to issue a statement clarifying that the film is not “an endorsement of real-world violence of any kind.” Plenty of external factors contributed to that clarification, and the film itself is clearly not intended to function as a depraved call to arms for the world’s villainous clowns. It is, however, a project drowning in self-seriousness.
