'Judy' Biopic Pays Deft, Heartbreaking Homage to Garland As an LGBTQ Icon

'Judy' Biopic Pays Deft, Heartbreaking Homage to Garland As an LGBTQ Icon If some critics were put off by a perceived lack of queerness in last year's blockbuster Bohemian Rhapsody, well, a biopic about a cis straight woman is here to pick up the slack with Judy. Of course, the film's subject, Judy Garland, is no mere mortal. The girl born Frances Gumm to a vaudeville family in the Midwest went on to become one of the inescapable queer icons of all time before -- and fueled in part by -- her untimely death at age 47 in 1969 just days before the Stonewall riots (which are connected in the minds of some LGBTQ historical gatekeepers, although others underplay the link).

Oh, and this is not the first time Renée has hinted that she's well up for a filming a fourth movie. In fact, during an appearance on CBS show The Talk, she even suggested a name for it: 'Bridget Jones: The Menopause.' It has a nice ring to it, right?

'No, I know Helen’s [Fielding] written the book, and I love this character. So, I mean, if they call me, I’ll go running,' she said.

The fourth film would be based on Fielding's third book in the series, 2013's Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.

The novel sees her protagonist widowed at the age of 51 after Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth on-screen, passes away (*cry*).

Renée Zellweger’s Performance In Judy Is Dazzling. The Rest Of The Movie Is Not.

Renée Zellweger’s Performance In Judy Is Dazzling. The Rest Of The Movie Is Not. Judy makes a bold move in its opening sequence: Despite all the hype about Renee Zellwegger’s transformation into Judy Garland, Rupert Goold’s biopic kicks off with a flashback to her younger days on the set of the Wizard of Oz. Young Judy, played by Darci Shaw, is then just this side of a regular girl, beloved by audiences for her natural charm. But her request to get a little time off is met with a steely speech courtesy of a terrifying Louis B. Mayer, who makes her understand that there are a thousand girls in line to take her place. She’s replaceable, he tells her, as they walk down the Yellow Brick Road.

With this new found confidence, there's no better time to get back in front of the camera as Bridget Jones. The only question is: could you handle a film without Colin Firth?
