The ITV soap airs Sinead's final scenes next week, as she passes away at home with her husband Daniel (Rob Mallard) and baby son Bertie by her side.

Corrie started airing Sinead's cancer storyline last year, initially keeping quiet about whether the plot's ending would see her survive or die.

Speaking at a Coronation Street press event on Monday (October 14), MacLeod was asked whether it was always his plan to give the story a tragic ending.

He replied: "More or less, yes. When I started, Katie [McGlynn, who plays Sinead] and I spoke at length about what the right ending would be.

"Life does sometimes take an unbelievably cruel turn. We both felt that was the most responsible way to end the story rather than, as sometimes happens in soap, people miraculously recover from a terrible illness as if it never happened.

"Telling the tough version was the right version to tell."

Katie McGlynn added: "I agree 100%. Life is not a fairytale. Sometimes soaps and TV tend to do the happy ending.

"I thought if we're doing the story, we need to do it properly to raise awareness. I hope people who've been through similar situations find it cathartic."

Coronation Street has lined up two special episodes next week, which are solely focused on the end of Sinead's storyline. The first is a standalone 30-minute episode on Thursday, October 24, while the second is an hour-long edition on Friday, October 25.

Digital Spy and other media were present for an exclusive first screening of these episodes on Monday. Although Sinead passes away peacefully, the scenes in store don't shy away from the harsh and heartbreaking reality of her final hours.

Asked about taking the realistic approach, MacLeod continued: "It felt like the respectful, interesting and least soapy way of doing it was to be in there and see the difficulties Sinead and Daniel both experience. There are moments of laughter and warmth still in there.

"We wanted to just let it tell its own story in its own time, so it was a conscious decision not to fast forward that. After two and a half years of telling a story, it would be remiss of us to gallop through the end.

"The right thing to do was to spend a lot of time in that room and see how it transpires."

Coronation Street airs Sinead's final episode on Friday, October 25 at 7.30pm on ITV.
