“I was just 16 months old when my dad saved my life,” announced 19-year-old Tasnim Lowe at the beginning of her emotional exploration of her family history, Why Dad Killed Mum: My Family’s Secret.

Anyone expecting a happy story of heroism was swiftly disabused, however, as Lowe calmly explained that her father hadn’t dived in to rescue her from her burning family home but had instead placed her under a tree before going back inside to burn down said building while her 16-year-old mother Lucy, her 17-year-old aunt Sarah and her grandmother Eileen, 49, were inside.

Lowe’s father, Azhar Ali Mehmood, was subsequently jailed for 18 years and the tiny baby was raised by her grandfather in a relationship that was clearly loving but, crucially, lacking in boundaries. “It was difficult growing up…I didn’t know what to say…‘Hey I’m Tas. My dad’s a murderer. Wanna be friends…'”

Now her father had a parole hearing coming up, an event that left the teenager keen to unpick the threads of her family’s dark past. What emerged was a far bleaker tale than might previously have been imagined, a terrible account of grooming, wider abuse, a pregnancy at 14, and a murder that was carried out to send a warning to any other foolish young girls who might consider leaving the men who controlled them.

The impressive Lowe continued to lobby everyone from police to MPs to ensure that the whole picture became clear. “It’s very important for my mum’s voice to be heard because she can’t do anything, she can’t share her story,” she explained. She should be deeply proud that her moving film went some way to addressing that decades-long injustice.
