Digital Spy recently chatted to Lottie Henshall, who plays Jade, for a reaction interview after the on-screen bombshell.

What a twist! When you joined the show, did you always know Jade's true identity?

"I knew that Jade was John Stape's daughter from the start and had a basic outline of what she was coming into the show to do, but there has been a lot of character progression since then. I didn't realise that she would develop so much as a character.

"I thought that Jade would just come in, do a load of bad things and then leave again. But there's much more to this character than meets the eye and I'm excited for the audience to see that."

Has it been hard to keep quiet, amid all of the online speculation over who Jade is?

"Sometimes there would be comments online from people saying: 'Oh here we go, Tyrone and Jade, another affair!' You really want to leave a comment back saying: 'Don't be so sure of yourself!' (Laughs.) Obviously I couldn't do that!

"I've really enjoyed reading the theories of what people think about Jade, as it's been really interesting. I've even had people thinking that Jade is going to have an affair with Fiz! People have gone to town with their ideas.

"But not many people have guessed that Jade is the daughter of John Stape. I know some people have their theories, but the fact that it hasn't leaked out is amazing."

How would you describe Jade's agenda?

"The main goal for Jade is to be with Hope and to look after her. She wants to keep her safe. Jade has been fed lies for her entire life. She was even lied to about who her dad was.

"Jade has also been told that Fiz is a bad person and that she killed John. She's been brainwashed into thinking Fiz is this evil person – and she genuinely does believe that.

"Jade is not trying to hurt Fiz because she's a nasty person, but because she truly believes that Fiz is bad for Hope. She'll do anything in her power to keep Hope safe."

Did Jade know John?

"John didn't know that she ever existed, but that isn't explained on screen until further down the line. I now know that Jade never actually met him.

"Jade believes that John was aware of her. He would supposedly send birthday and Christmas cards, so she thought he knew that she existed. But Jade does later find out that was all a lie and it was her mum who wrote the cards."

Did Jade deliberately engineer her first meeting with Fiz and Hope in Birmingham?

"I haven't found that out myself yet! There are a few different options there. It could have been a coincidence – maybe she looked into it after realising that Hope had the surname Stape. She could have also done a bit of research and then worked her way into the school that Hope attended. It could go either way."

We did see Jade getting close to Tyrone at certain points. Was that part of her plan, or a red herring for the viewers?

"We did want to tease the audience a little bit, but it was also part of Jade's plan. She didn't want to get with Tyrone, but she did want to manipulate him to get him on her side. There was never any romantic intention, but she wanted him to think of her as a lovely person who wouldn't do anything wrong."

On Friday (November 29), Fiz and Tyrone tell Jade that her services are no longer required, as Hope is back in school. How does Jade react?

"Jade is raging. She has just started to work her magic and everything is going well. She's a puppeteer pulling at the strings and she's started to have some success, but all of a sudden she loses that. She's left with no plan and she doesn't know what to do.

"We see her absolutely lose it on Friday, which was so fun to film. The viewers may even wonder if she is going to kill someone, because she gets so angry. It's a question of what she's capable of. She's John's daughter, so is she capable of killing?

"It'll be a while before the residents of the street know her true identity. The viewers will know much more than the characters in the episodes coming up."

When Jade packs her bags and leaves the Dobbs house next week, does she have a plan?

"Jade also gives Hope a burner phone so they can keep in contact. That way she can come up with a new plan to get Hope back."

Are you worried about potential fan backlash for messing with a popular family?

"At the end of the day, it's such an amazing character to play. To come in straight away and have a big storyline – with a massive backstory too – is an honour and a privilege.

"It's a job and such a great acting opportunity. Jade is a character, so if they hate her, that's fine and they can think whatever they want! I've got a thick skin because it doesn't offend me!

"When I read the comments on Twitter this week saying 'Jade's a cow', I was loving it! I thought: 'Job done well so far!' I was aware that I'd be causing trouble for the family, but what a great part to play."

Do you hope viewers see Jade as more than just a villain?

"Eventually! It's taken me a while to get to know her. We're so far in advance with the filming, as we're about eight weeks ahead of what you're seeing on screen. In some of the scenes I've been doing recently, it's really emotional and Jade is broken.

"Everything she has done is wrong, but the reason is her love for Hope. All she wanted was to protect her. I do hope the viewers constantly change their minds when it comes to Jade. Our intention was to leave viewers confused and keep them asking questions."

What have Alan Halsall (Tyrone) and Jennie McAlpine (Fiz) been like to work with?
