However, Netflix later dismissed the rumours, saying any news on casting "remains pure speculation" as the new series hasn't even been ordered yet.
The statement read: "We are currently filming season 4 of The Crown, but have not commissioned any further seasons as yet, therefore any news on casting remains pure speculation."
Dame Helen Mirren was also thought to be in the running, but when asked if she would want the role, she said: "I don’t think so. I think it’s more interesting when you see other portraits and it builds into a more interesting picture than just someone coming back."

The episodes are likely to be filmed in 2021 and 2022, so it's unlikely the season will drop until 2022.
Also, the wait between seasons 2 and 3 was longer than 1 and 2 due to the cast overhaul, so we should definitely expect a longer wait for season 5.
