Westlife's Shane Filan releases statement following mother's death
The Westlife star has thanked fans for their supportMae Filan passed away at Sligo's North West Hospice yesterday surrounded by family.
There was also a strong reaction to the fact that the singer who was hosted in ‘Tubridy’s bar’ surrounded by pints. But then again, what’s a Shane MacGowan ‘gig’ without at least some controversy eh?
But there was one very definitive thing that Shane ensured there was no arguing about and that was his best known song Fairytale of New York.
The singer’s mind was a sharp as ever and he managed to put Ryan in his place on several occasions and didn’t hold back when the presenter challenged him about a particular word in the song which can caused it to be banned from some stations.
There's no way the State will bail out the FAI, says Ross over €10m request
Sports Minister Shane Ross has turned down a €10m bailout request from the FAI as it struggles with debts of €55m. Mr Ross, who is due to appear before the Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport tomorrow, made it clear to the FAI last night that it's up to European football's governing body, Uefa, and not the State to provide it with a financial lifeline.
However Shane faced down the criticism of Fairytale of New York, as only Shane can, in the most punk, devil-may-care way.
When Ryan asked whether some of the lyrics to Fairytale of New York were a little dated singer Lisa o’Neill stood up for the star and stated that ‘Shane finishes his songs.’
Shane weighed into the conversation with a cheeky innocently asking Ryan, ‘what’s wrong with it?’ before adding: ‘I’ve heard it’s offensive to gays.’
Ryan explained that the word ‘f*****’ could be deemed offensive to which Shane responded: ‘oh f*** off’.
Ryan then uttered what everyone else was thinking: ‘So that’s that settled then!’
Twitter it seems agreed with the singer. One person posted:

As a gay man I'm in no way offended by FTONY trying to censor a song like that is wrong!!!! you cant censor historical poetry. Those who want to censor such a song need to get a life. There was no mallice in the writing of it long live the
Whatever your opinion on Fairytale of New York, what’s quite clear is that Shane MacGowan doesn’t care.
