Doctor Strange star Chiwetel Ejiofor has revealed that his character is set to return in upcoming sequel Multiverse of Madness.

The actor, who plays Baron Karl Mordo in the 2016 Marvel movie, confirmed his involvement in the follow-up while promoting his new Netflix film The Old Guard recently.

"We're hoping to start pretty soon is what I can tell you," he told Screen Rant, when asked what superhero fans should expect from the outing. "So, you know, as soon as possible. We're all really excited to get going and to get cracking with it. I can't wait."

In the comics, Mordo is perhaps best known for being an enemy of both Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. Ejiofor's movie version was certainly not a baddie though, and instead, it depicted him helping Strange learn the ways of the mystic arts during his time in Kamar-Taj.

Towards the end of the outing, however, Mordo becomes disillusioned, after learning that his mentor, The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), had been harnessing the power of the Dark Dimension to keep herself alive.

His disappointment deepens when Strange uses the Eye of Agamotto to bend reality, and he leaves the group. Later, in an after-credits scene, he spells out his plan to rid the world of all sorcerers.

While it's already been announced that Rachel McAdams will not be reprising her role as the titular hero's love interest Christine Adams, Ejiofor won't be the only existing cast member making a comeback.

Benedict Cumberbatch will return as the surgeon-turned-Sorcerer Supreme Stephen Strange, of course, while Benedict Wong is set to return as Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum-protecting pal Wong.

Avengers star Elizabeth Olsen will also appear as Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is due to be released on May 7, 2021.
