Margot Robbie will lead a female-fronted Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise for Disney, featuring all new characters on a fresh adventure.

The actress is reuniting with Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson for the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which will be a separate project from the reboot currently being devised by Pirates writer Ted Elliott and Chernobyl's award-winning creator Craig Mazin.

Plot details aren't being released yet, but the movie won't be a spinoff of the long-running franchise that follows Johnny Depp's infamous pirate Jack Sparrow on many a swashbuckling adventure.

Pirates of the Caribbean's longterm producer Jerry Bruckheimer is also attached to the project.

Meanwhile, along with their collaboration on Birds of Prey, Robbie and Hodson recently launched the Lucky Exports Pitch Program, which is an initiative aimed at getting more female-identifying writers hired by studios to write action-centric movies.

Robbie - who has her own production company LuckyChap Entertainment - has had an acclaimed start to 2020 after being nominated for her second Academy Award for her role as fictional character Kayla Popsil in Bombshell.

The 29-year-old star was also nominated twice for a BAFTA award in the same category back in February, in which she was up for 'Best Supporting Actress' for Bombshell and her role as Sharon Tate in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
