Frozen 3 feels like a certainty for Disney after Frozen 2 became the biggest animation of all time with a huge $1.45 billion.

Talking to Digital Spy before the sequel's release though, Jennifer Lee – director, writer and chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios – said that it feels like this could be the end for Anna and Elsa.

"For us, this feels like what we set out to accomplish. It feels like the end, but the first one felt like the end when we did it. We don't know. I think, right now, it feels like the end," she explained.

That's not a definitive no though and with Frozen 2 now arriving on NOW TV and Disney+, there's bound to be talk of a third movie, so what do we know about a possible Frozen 3 so far?

Disney made us wait six years for Frozen 2, but it proved to be worth the wait and looks set to be just as big a hit this Christmas.

The sequel delves into Anna and Elsa's past to discover why Elsa was born with magical powers, as well as raising questions that the sisters hadn't even thought to ask that could change their lives forever.

Director Chris Buck had said before the sequel's release that the two movies work together to "form one complete story", but does that mean we won't get a Frozen 3?

To try to answer that question, we need to head into spoiler territory, so look away now if you haven't seen Frozen 2 yet.

Frozen II Launching On Disney+ UK Two Weeks Early

Frozen II Launching On Disney+ UK Two Weeks Early Apparently side-stepping (or working out) tricky licensing agreements, Disney has announced that the animated blockbuster Frozen II will arrive on Disney+ in the UK earlier than originally announced. Two weeks, earlier, in fact, on 3 July. Presumably to take advantage of continuing lockdowns and stay-at-home orders, even as restrictions start to loosen, the film will arrive earlier than the original planned 17 July launch.

The sequel sees Anna and Elsa head to the enchanted forest outside of Arendelle to discover why a mysterious voice has been calling to Elsa, and stop the enchanted spirits from destroying Arendelle.

It turns out that back in the past, there was a battle between Arendelle soldiers and the people of Northuldra who live in the forest, leading to the forest being blocked off from the rest of the world.

Long story short, they discover that their parents were on their way to Ahtohallan to discover the source of Elsa's power when they were shipwrecked. Anna and Elsa find their ship in the enchanted forest and discover that their mother was Northuldran.

What's more, their grandfather was responsible for the conflict and created a dam in the forest that was intended to weaken the Northuldran people. To right the wrongs of the past, Anna realises she needs to break the dam to free the forest.

How to watch Frozen 2 on Disney Plus UK

How to watch Frozen 2 on Disney Plus UK Disney Plus will soon host one of the biggest films ever made - here's how you can watch Frozen 2 in the UK.But all of those are dwarfed by the juggernaut that is Frozen II. When it opened in cinemas at the end of last year, it had the biggest all-time worldwide opening for an animated film. To date, it has grossed over $1.45 billion, making it the second highest-grossing animated film of all time, and the tenth highest-grossing of any film, live-action or animated.

And she does it just in time as Elsa was frozen in Ahtohallan seeking the voice, which turned out to be a memory of her mother.

Elsa becomes the "fifth spirit", the bridge between the magical world and the human world, but as we all know, a bridge has two sides and Anna is the other one. Elsa stays in the forest and Anna becomes Queen of Arendelle, ensuring that the two kingdoms live happily ever after.

It feels like a natural conclusion to the arcs set up in Frozen, delivering on the promise of the producer that the two movies would tell "one complete story". Elsa has now fully accepted her magical side and Anna has found her place in the world.

And Jennifer Lee – director, writer and chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios – certainly feels like this could be the end.

"For us, this feels like what we set out to accomplish. It feels like the end, but the first one felt like the end when we did it. We don't know. I think, right now, it feels like the end," she told Digital Spy.

It's certainly true that the original Frozen didn't lend itself to a sequel. There weren't really any unanswered questions or mysteries from the first movie, so it never felt like it needed a sequel.

The radio adaptation puts his overconfidence down to having just been told by Motti that he could use the Death

That's what makes what they achieved with Frozen 2 all the more impressive, as it does feel like a natural continuation rather than a retread or lazy cash-in.

But we feel like it would be harder to continue that story into a third outing. They'd have to manufacture some conflict that meant Anna and Elsa were threatened once again, and it could risk becoming an unnecessary sequel.

Of course, if Frozen 2 becomes a billion-dollar hit like the first movie, then the conversation might change. And we'd imagine all of the core cast – Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad and Jonathan Groff – would come back.

Maybe we're being naive, but it feels like the creative team didn't come back for a sequel until they knew they had a worthy story to tell, and they wouldn't just rush into a cash-grab threequel.

It could well finally be time to let it go.

Frozen 2 is in cinemas now.
