This Morning's Phillip Schofield received words of advice and comfort from John Barrowman on the day he announced that he was gay, John has revealed.

Phillip spoke about his sexuality for the first time in February as he released a statement on Instagram and also talked to co-host Holly Willoughby live on This Morning about his decision to publicly announce that he is gay.

Speaking to OK! magazine, actor and singer John, who also guest-presents This Morning on occasion, said that he went to chat to Phillip after the news had broken and shared some heartfelt words with him.

"I've known Phillip for years and I'd never imagined those headlines. I'm not saying I haven't thought about it, but that's none of my business," he said.

John, who is gay himself and has been with his husband Scott Gill since 1993, said that he had gone to comfort Phillip in his dressing room after he noticed him looking upset.

"I had a chat with him, the night it all came out in the press, in his dressing room and I saw his face," John said. "It's a face I've had before – upset, afraid and sad to be hurting other people. I said to him, 'It will get better, the people around you who love you will understand. You'll get through it'."

Phillip has previously spoken about the "heart-breaking conversations" he had with wife Stephanie Lowe and daughters Molly and Ruby when he told them about his sexuality.

John said that he is "pleased" that Phillip's family have remained so close, adding: "Hopefully it will lead to a greater happiness for him and his family."

Phillip has spoken about how supportive his family have been, saying that they have been "loving and caring" and adding that they have reassured him that "it's OK, we love you, we're proud of you".

"Every person I tell it [to, it] gets a little lighter. But at the same time, I have made this decision, which is essential for me and essential for my head, and that's principally the reason I have done this," he said.

"Of course, I'm really very aware – Steph and the girls are at home watching this – and we're all together, we've spent a lot of time together. They've been supporting us as we get to this moment because we knew it was coming. I feel a little lighter, but I'm also very very aware, there's no question that it causes pain and upset."
