Holby City appeared to pay a hidden tribute to Doctor Who in tonight's episode as John Barrowman made a special guest appearance.

When locum doctor Drew Nicholson-Heath (Barrowman) arrived on the wards of Holby in tonight's episode (July 28), he made quite the impression and got a bit of a telling-off from Max McGerry (Jo Martin) as she suspected he was trying to poach some of her staff for a fancy hospital in Dubai.

Max questioned Drew on why he was getting involved in locum work, to which he replied that he was "trying to give something back", although Max suggested that he was actually planning to "take something else away" and warned: "Hands off."

Drew gave Max a salute and called her "Doctor" – just like Barrowman's Doctor Who character Captain Jack Harkness used to do with the Doctor on the BBC sci-fi show.

Of course, Jo Martin played an incarnation of the Doctor herself in the 12th series of Doctor Who and even appeared in the same episode as Captain Jack in episode five of that series, 'Fugitive of the Judoon' – so this meeting felt very much like an undercover Doctor Who team-up.

BBC One soap Holby City is set to welcome Doctor Who star and Dancing on Ice judge John Barrowman for what we're sure will be a faaaaaaaabulous episode of the programme later this year. Barrowman will be guest starring in one episode of the drama, playing the role of visiting

Plenty of fans spotted the moment and shared their excitement on Twitter:

The actors actually confirmed in a sweet behind-the-scenes clip that the salute was a little nod to the Doctor, with Martin excitedly saying that she was "melting".

Drew's appearance had been billed as a one-off, but Barrowman has teased that we could see 'The Poacher' back on the wards in future.

"We don't know whether he's going to be a good guy or a bad guy, but through the grapevine he might be coming back," he said.

Seeing as Drew appears to have quickly got the measure of slippery Cameron Dunn (Nic Jackman), shutting him down at the end of the episode and warning Nicky McKendrick (Belinda Owusu) to watch out for him, there will certainly be plenty of fans who are keen to see him return to make sure Cameron gets his comeuppance.

Holby City continues on Tuesday, August 4 at 8pm on BBC One. Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US, and will return for a festive special.
